    Trying wood together

Whats a zip tie? tie wrap you mean? :p I don't mind using them my worry is they aren't too flexible, not like garden wire which you can bend round root shapes etc. Hmmm, I guess I will have to try it!

    Trying wood together

So rather than using an elastic band or cotton you can use tie wraps right? What about that garden twine which was mentioned on Sunday. Won't the metal inside the green plastic coating rust and pollute the water?

Thanks. I know what you mean but personally I still find it hard to translate what I see around me nature wise to a tank layout.

    Aquascaping Thursdays!

Nice one Graeme, in many ways I envy you being able to work on such a big tank, in many ways I don't! :D But congrats on working with the guys there at TGM I cannot think of anyone better suited to the role. Not sure I agree with your choice of soundtrack though I find The Kings Of Leon very...

    My aquarium circa 2000

Yeah I had to move him into my friends 3 footer where he or should I say she as it turned out bred and produced a lot of fry. She was absolutely tough as old boots and lived for years in my mates tank.

    My aquarium circa 2000

I'd actually tried to do a planted tank far earlier than that, in 1993 really when I became very influenced by a tank I saw in an issue of Fishkeeping Answers. I bought a 3 foot tank and had it running with an undergravel filter and powerhead, I remember it had a bit of bogwood in it and loads...

    My aquarium circa 2000

An interesting find from one of my friends last night, he sent me a picture I had taken of my planted tank 8 years ago. I had forgotten completely about it but seeing it now brings back both warm memories and a lot of amusement actually about how little I knew. Note the plain aquarium gravel...

    Help/Advice

You could have a small clump or crypts or something. If you move your filter inlets and outlets to the opposide side it would therefore be hidden behind the plants and then you wouldn't need to add anything. It doesn't look bare to me it makes sense to have the lawn effect look like that.

    ADA 2008 party

Great as it is I wouldn't like to win for the simple reason you have to wear that ridiculous headpiece thing!

    Open foreground or planted foreground?

I think open foregrounds are really cool. What is great about them is you don't have to worry about trimming a foreground plant and keeping that looking good. There are drawbacks to using them though, with a system using aquasoil the technique is to use small rocks between the soil and the sand...

What's your most favourite aquascape of all time?

I would say this is what I would like to achieve eventually, this is one of my fave aquascapes of all time. I pretty much love all of Amano's stuff though so it's very hard to choose. This one too, I believe is one of the best examples out there by someone who isn't Mr Amano.

I was just about to slag you off for putting George in there  but then I saw my tank! :D 8) Thanks very much I am really pleased to have turned someone onto Amano's work.

I haven't used e tennellus for a few years but would the runner plants not be smaller and more compact that the bigger ones you would probably get in a pot?

    Help me improve my scape.

The e tennellus on the right hand side in front of the wood arrangement is too large, if you remove it it would look bettter IMO. As you said I think you're on the right track with that.

Aquascaping discussion - fast, slow and styles

In terms of slowest and quickest aquascapes I can't really answer as I've had a lot of trouble over the years, and most of the things I've done have ended in failure and disaster. The first planted tank I saw which really got me hooked was an amazonian river tank in Fishkeeping Answers (still...

    ADA online Aquajournal

It looks to be a very well put together site, there is even an 'ask amano' section LOL where you can ask him anything, even stuff aquarium unrelated it seems. "If the temperature of the substrate is significantly low, the root growth of aquatic plants slows down as well. A Growth Plate, which...

Fixing wood together to create interesting shapes

I would just use tiewraps or ADA wood tight maybe. With my new setup I am using three pieces of redmoor arranged in a specific fashion, so I will probably use black tiewraps to keep them in place I think.

    Rescape plan

Thanks guys, yes I think this is the right approach, it can't be any more messy than when I had to remove aquasoil from 100cm tank but that's another story! I must say though although I have neglected to manage my tank it has stayed remarkably resilient, the only algae has been on the glass...

    Rescape plan

Hello, I'm looking for some advice on how to rescape my tank, my 60cm one. At the moment the plan is as follows, this is how I'm going to approach it. Get a huge plastic container and raise it up on some stools Take out the water from the tank and put it in the container setup external filter...

    120cm NA

It looks really great George. I really like it....apart from the ferns. I just think they're too big and too overpowering for the layout. If you replaced them with narrow fern it would be awesome. Just my two cents as our american friends say.

    Oliver Knott

I wouldn't give it the same creedence as George that is for sure, it's no Damien Hurst! There is very little to praise with the layout, instead he has opted for something one would see in a florida theme park.

    Aquarium Background

For me the grey wins and I also like the blue. I would however only use a background if I had a dodgy coloured wall behind the tank or some wallpaper or something. I prefer tanks with no backgrounds they look bigger somehow. Adding a backlight can make things looks really dramatic. I'm not keen...

    Aquarium Plant Paradise

I love the book itself but pretty much the more recent ADA catalogs have great info in them too. The Aquajournals, both english and japanese are amazing and I would recommend any of them. I have LOADS of aquajournals so if you want me to recommend some good ones around your specific area of...

    Wood for tank

There must be a way we can get this wood and 'process' it, i.e make it suitable for a tank. The type of dead tree you typically see in farmers fields, is it a ewe tree or something? That would be ideal.

    Wood for tank

Extremely difficult to find decent wood in the UK, I am going to find a way to get this stuff I am sure of it.
