    2ft x 2ft x 2ft cube

I think Nick16 has a 4x2x2 aquarium, it's double the width but similar dimensions. :) It's would be a really interesting aquarium to aquascape.

Discussion: What's your favourite part of the hobby and why?

Re: Discussion: What's your favourite part of the hobby and I would see myself as quite knowledgeable but not successful or 'good' at the whole aquascapilng/fishkeeping hobby. I like the initial stage of an aquascape, e.g. planning it and hardscaping an aquarium. It's usually downhill from...

What's the demand for high street planted aquarium shops?

Re: What's the demand for high street planted aquarium shops This is a big discussion and I've often thought about it myself. I think hobbies are such a niche thing. Especially somethin like fishkeeping/aquascaping. I mean it's growing for sure but in my opinion not enough to take that much...

    Detrius buildup in a tank

As others have suggested, aim for at least 10x turnover as far as filtration is concerned but the more the merrier really - no need for over about 20x though, especially in smaller tanks. In bigger tanks it might be more of a problem so obviously use more flow from two or more filters. Also...

    Good Effort PFK

Maybe it's just me but I was quite dissapointed with the latest PFK. The only article that remotely interested me was Georges biotope. The last few haven't been as good IMO.

Interesting stuff, they both look really modern, clean and polished. Nice one! :) I'll look forward to seeing the final peice.

No competition for 1st quarter of 2010?

I think the paladrium and set mount/tuype ideas are good ones. Also, how about a competition where you can only use hardscape and maybe even plants found from your local lake/park/wherever - just collected from nature. Or one where you give us an inspirational image and we have to recreate it...

    Cats and fish tanks

This might sound weird but I think it depends on your cat. Some take an interest and some don't. My tanks all have hoods apart from one which didn't. They are all in my room in the loft and our cats hardly come up here. I think I caught one of them taking an interest once, but they wouldn't go...

    plants

As Paul said, the forum he reccomended is where members of the forum sell and swap spare plants. If you can't find what you're after here, then there's always the selection of sponsors we have too. :) Hope that helps, and welcome!

    One last try

I'm not sure what it could be but I'd definately try more lighting. HC needs a lot of light, and even from the photo your tank looks quite dimly lit. :)

    how to change tank?

I've done it this before, might not be the right or best way but it worked fine for me. - Remove livestock to a bucket or other tank. I also kept the filter and heater running with them but they should be fine for a little while withought that. Keep the filter wet though. - Put the plants in...

    Backings

I've got a peice of black card stuck to the wall with bluetack. It's probably not ideal for everyone, but it does the job for me. I used to stick backing from Aqua Essentials to the rear of the tank, but by doing it this way you get an extra sense of depth. ;)

    iwugumi talk

I would personally go for an island, because I think the dimensions suit tnat. You couls set it up to be viewed from more than one angle (maybe even all angles) as a challenge! But you could also get a great sense of depth with the right rocks and placement with that two foot depth.

    Open letter to Forum Administration;

The whole poing of UKAPS is to evolve and further the hobby as a whole, so I can't see it closing any time soon. That would be against it's own beliefs, and plus I doubt most of its members would be happy! On the flip side, understand that every forum has a life span.

I'm no good ad identifying these things but I'm sure someone will be able to help out there. In need of quick plant storage help!

I have kept plants just in a bucket of water for a few weeks before without too much hassle. I don't really know the best way to store them, but either way as long as you keep them moist, lit etc they should be fine for just four days.

    tank planning

I personally would forget the rock and move the wood to just off centre and you'd probably be onto something there. I'm really into Blyxa mounds at the moment, so looking forward to this.
  29. rawr

    tank planning

I really like it, except I would have the wood right at the endge like that. In fact, why not just not have it at all? I think it might look a bit weird having the wood plonked there, and then a random rock plonked along a bit but that's just me - it might work! Also, what's the grey area?

    Cheapest optiwhites?

What size was the tank for the £90 quote? To me, £50 seems way too cheap for an opti-white. I would have trouble finding a float glass tank of that size for that price if it wasn't clearseal!

    Video's of your tanks

The only people that spring to mind are of course Paulo (LondonDragon) and Arana (Mark) although I'm not sure of their Youtube usernames. I think George also has a few videos of his tanks, and there are some of The Green Machine's tanks on there.

    Transporting a planted tank

The only problem with not emptying the tank as much as possible is that when driving etc and even carrying the water will get swished around so much and you'll be left with a mess. I would try to retain as much of the water as possible though (e.g. in a bucket) but I'm not sure if that's...

    New Beginnings-Moss only 35L?

I think you can get arcadia 14/15/18w units from TGM but you'd have to check that yourself. Alternatively, the only other thing I know is to use two 9w arcpods.
  37. rawr

    New Beginnings-Moss only 35L?

You could use a nutritious substrate if you wanted such as ADA Aquasoil or Oliver Knott's Nauresoil, or alternatively go for sand or gravel or something and add capsules to benefit plants rooted in the substrate. An 11w Arcpod would suffice from The Green Machine or Aqua Essentials. You could...

    New Beginnings-Moss only 35L?

I think a moss only tank would be nice. Check out the early stages of LondonDragon's shrimp tank. As far as the wood is concerned, I think you'll be alright in terms of thinckness as long as the branches aren't ridiculously thin. If you're just using moss, you won't need a nutritious...

How often do you get a flash of inspiration?

I think you're just like...psychic or something Steve. I've never heard of anyone else getting these weird thoughts! :P Nah only joking, I get them all the time. Point in the right direction?

If you're new to the planted hobby, the best thing to do first is get the hang on growing and caring for aquatic plants before you consider aquascaping. ;) This can be an expensive hobby but if you spend the money to begin with then it will pay off (and there are some deals to be had out...

Fish then Plants, or Plants then Fish?

I think it depends. If you're a fish person, or want to keep a particular type of fish they you'll plant around them. If you're doing a biotope, you'll obviously create the environment that the fish want. I thik the general rule of aquascaping is to stock the tank after planting. It's probably...

    Soaking driftwood

I don't see a problem with it. Just give it a good scrub and wash when it comes out just in case though. The typical wood usually takes a few weeks to fully sink, but it does vary depending on the type of wood/size etc.

Crypts and Echino, no stems in a Hi tech

I think you've got a nice setup and what you want to do is definately achieveable. The key is to do so gradually, maybe replacing spots of plant with low-maintenance/light plants maybe on a monthly basis. You could then reduce the burst of light because it won't really be needed for these type...

How easy is a low-tech nano?

I think it's possible. Even if you have enough light, higher-tech plants tend to be easier to care for because you can just use Easy Carbo as a carbon supplement because the tank is so small. Even a weekly water change won't be that much effort surely, with it being such a small tank? If you...

PFK subscribers - what do you get from the magazine?

There has been a lot more planted aquarium related articles in the last few issues. Cleaning plants ?

I wouldn't recommend using bleach to be honest, it just seems a bit problematic. As suggested, you could use a few Assassin Snails. However, what I would recommend is giving the plants a good wash under the tap or in a bucket of water, wash out all the roots, nooks and crannies. Also give the...
