    Rainbowfish Identification

You are definitely right that it is not a M. splendida, it doesn't really fit distinctly into any species or variety I recognise. It looks like a hybrid.

Adding to the above, store dry foods in dark preferebly cool storage (fridge), minimize air contact; air tight container and if in sealed bags expell as much air as possible. I often have to do six monthly checks and throw away some.

    Congo Tetra & Rainbows?

It depends on what Rainbowfish you are thinking of. Six M.trifasciata are not really suitable, but you could keep M.boesmani "Aytinjo" or M.lacustris and smaller species like M.praecox. Ogilbyi, mucchullochi...

    Angels and Cardinals

I didnt read all the replies, but from my own experiance placing juvenile angels in a tank already with an established population of cardinals is probably one of the better ways of introducing them. I never had any predation that I was aware of even when they grew into adults. I assume it is...

    A few of my Rainbowfish...

Thanks all, Edvert, I dont keep a biotype, you can get some plants that are found in the respective habitats, but harder to find for the Papua species. A lot of rainbows dont actually live in areas with a lot of dense aquatic vegetation. Regarding cross breeding, rainbows can even do this...

Preventing Pseudomugil from jumping out of the tank

I think you will be fine, although blue-eyes are small their eggs and hatched fry are a lot larger than the Melanotaenia and Chilatherina genus of rainbowfish. They are also comparitely fast developers. Start feeding with fine powder foods like Seramicron or golden pearls 5-50micron grade...

Preventing Pseudomugil from jumping out of the tank

There are many strains of P.gertrudae in the world, but those in Victor's photo arent "standard", they look like Aru IIs or IVs which are slightly larger than common aquarium strain gerts, their tail colour spots give them away which are absent in the common LFS variety. They are actually more...

Preventing Pseudomugil from jumping out of the tank

I bought one of these last year to trial on a breeding tank. They are neat, small mesh, but it is pretty expensive. If you have only one aquarium, it may well be worth it though.

    Best fish euthanasia method

Motile animals have a nervous system that enables them to respond to undesirable situations. A fish in pain will usually exhibit physical signs of distress, even in a weakened state. It is true we do not know everything about the subject, but the properties of anaesthetics are not to my...

    Best fish euthanasia method

Personally I put the fish in a small containder with tank water mixed with clove oil (10 drops or so), sends them into a deep sleep which they do not recover from. I check on the container over several hours, usually leave overnight before disposal, just to make sure the fish has actually gone.

    over priced fish...

I am not going to say too much, but I would rather fish not be cheap as chips, far too many people have little respect for these life forms under their responsibility. I agree with the minimum buy requirements as well. There has to be balance though.

My stock wish list for new planted tank anything you'd add or change?

The guppy idea seems out of place with regard to water requirements, but personally I would really cut down on the number of species and have larger numbers of a few. Discus have a rather larger impact on the environment because of feeding requirement and subsequent waste. You could possibly...

    150gal Indonesian Tank

I would give it a go, I dont know how old your fish are, but I dont think clowns wreck your plants straight away. Pencil fish & Rainbows. Are they compatible in a community tank ?

Same here, but looking at the current stocking, it reminds me of my early days in the tropical fish hobby, i dont know if the op has been keeping fish for more than a few years or not, but it can be hard given the variety of tempting fish available to keep to a few species when there are so...

Pencil fish & Rainbows. Are they compatible in a community tank ?

I cant see any M.lacustris in there, but I do see M.parkinsoni. M.parkinsoni and the boesemani get quite large, they are generally peaceful, but males can squabble a bit. I would say that a 180 is on the lower end for living space for them. Personally I would not choose them with pencil fish...

    Tank overstock?

My tanks are fairly heavily stocked, but they are large tanks with small to medium fish, 40 of those fish in a tank with a gross capacity of 50l is too much IME, as with others I would think 15-20 on the upper end.

    Cruelty - Bettas

I do not necesarily agree that keeping fish in aquariums is cruel. I think many people are cruel in the way they neglect the needs of thier fish or house them inappropriately. However I do not think fish think like we do. They hunger, they mate, the have a degree of interaction within their...

  38. sanj

A contagious disease or just old age?

It sounds bacterial. It could be that the fishes immune systems are keeping infection at bay until they are old and weak. Then again a tetra can live for 5 years and that is not exceptional.

    Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish

Hi, they are comparitively drab as youngsters although the ones I recently bred did seem to show promising colour, just not the intensity of the adults. I always used to check the quality of all the fish in the LFS tank, I would usually watch them over a few weeks if they were new in...

Also remove as much air from the bag when storing. There is a great supplier in the USA who makes high quality fish food. I think its called Ed's. I have not used him yet, but breeders over there seem to rate him highly, the food is a bit more expensive. Also was not sure about customs...

    Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish

Rainbowfish will generally spawn quite easily, but if you want to breed them it is a good idea to condition them well for a few weeks, more regular feeds of live food, frozen blood worm and krill. After this period think about the breeding. Spawning is easy, but raising fry successfully in...

    Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish

Generally when speaking about rainbows it is advised to keep more females to males or at least an equal sex ratio. However I think this varies from species to species and the conditions they are kept in. Large tanks are more forgiving. In regard to praecox I have kept more males to females...

    Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish

Pretty much as mentioned. Like most shoaling fish in the hobby, they arent consistantly tight shoalers, but they do group more tightly at times. Yasuhikotakia sidtjimunki - dwarf chain loach

It might be relative to tank size, but I find mine are at the bottom 90% of the time. When feeding they do swim up more. Another factor might be because mine are dwarfed by rainbowfish occupying the other levels. Having said that they dont seem shy around these larger fish. I certainly agree...

Yasuhikotakia sidtjimunki - dwarf chain loach

Radik, I have 25 of these in my large tank. I cant say much about the Hemianthus, but I have not had an issue with these fish plant wise. They do excavate a little around the rocks, really just for thier borrows and hiding places, nothing destructive for a 250l unless you are planning a...

Hi James, I have limited experiance with this species, I have kept them in the past and found them quite delicate, whether that is down to breeding or not I am not 100% certain. They are not bright red all the time, usually at certain times of day, early in the morning, soon after lights on...

    Oto's and SAE's

Yay! Im glad it has been of use to someone. :) Yes the web page states ; "C. reticulatus is actually an efficient consumer of BBA although this isn't yet widely-reported". The reason I could not personally verify on RAE is becuase he was introduced at the same time as the SAEs back in 2008...
  54. sanj

    Oto's and SAE's

C.reticulatus is very easy to tell apart from the species labelled as SAE. As for whether they will eat BBA im not sure, but they certainly graze algae generally. It shouldnt be labelled SAE or Flying Fox anywhere as it is the Reticulated Algae Eater. Hey ho, I long ago decided to regard the...

    Oto's and SAE's

Red Growth on my Rainbow Fish

If you have myco in your aquarium and most of us will do, it can transfer to any fish, but different species seem to be affected differently. There does seem to be a link between mass inbred fish like fancy guppies, dwarf gouramis and rainbowfish like praecox. Esstentially poor geneticially...

    Oto's and SAE's

That is fine and he probably did not know the difference at the time. Red Growth on my Rainbow Fish

Hi Ollie, waisting away is a sign of myco, but again waisting can be a sign of other infections also. I dont think stress alone will cause waisting, but stress can comprimise the immune system. There is little point overley worrying about mycobacteria since it can come from many sources and...
  61. sanj

    Oto's and SAE's

SAE will eat the food you feed other fish, but inbetween times they should be grazing the plants alot of the time. I have had mine since 2008 and while they will laze around a bit a substantial amount of time is given over to grazing the plants. I would not be without them. I have never had BBA...

Red Growth on my Rainbow Fish

Ollie, it is hard to say. I think I only ever saw this in my own fish when i very first kept rainbowfish. Does it stay the same and are there any other marks or lesions on any of your rainbows? It is very easy for rainbowfish keepers to jump to the conclusion that is might be symptoms of myco...

    Tebera Rainbowfish

Generally rainbowfish should improve in colour as they mature, but when they are old they can get a bit tatty around the edges. Still old fish would be in the 5+ year range and around 4" mark albeit females smaller. Diet is important and should be varied including a lot of green matter. Their...
  65. sanj

    Tebera Rainbowfish

Unfortunately most LFS strain Lake Tebera rainbowfish will not end up quite like those fish in the picture. They have been poorly mass bred and many specimens are not true, probably inadvertently crossed with other species. Occasionally you can come across the real deal, but they are not common.
  66. sanj

    Oto's and SAE's

Alot of people dont have the best kind of SAE to start with, plus these fish grow to 6" ultimately and ideally should be kept in groups although I would not say it is a necessity. Still on a 175 litre that would limit what else you can stock. If it were me, I probably would consider Ottos and...

    Siamese Algae Eaters

Agreed with Luis. That is why I wrote this post: http://www.ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=19176 in order to help people differentiate: 1. what constitutes a Siamese Algae Eater (from the links in my post) 2. the differences between those fish that ARE considered SAE (Siamese Agae Eaters).

    Which Crossocheilus siamensis???

Way back in 1994 a couple of guys wrote an article in The Krib on algae eating cyprinids and how to distinguish Crossocheilus siamensis, the Siamese Algae Eater from the likes of the Siamese Flying Fox and the Chinese Algae Eater. Pretty obvious you might think, but back then the SAE was not as...

    How awesome are torpedo barbs?

Flying Fox or Siamese Algae Eater?

Mark, I think i might need to capture some shots of my fish. In short C.siamensis does not even exist. There is no such species, but it is an umbrella term for a few closely related individuals. Stocking levels

1" per gallon is such an old rule, it originated decades ago, Im talking 1960s and possibly earlier. People did not have access to the equipment they have now. It is a good safe guide for someone new to the hobby who is keeping small to medium fish upto around 3" or so.

    Rainbows slow to settle in.

Yes they can suffer in a similar way to other inbred fish like fancy guppies and dwarf gouramis. Essentially many have weaker immune systems and dont fight off infections too well. A high proportion of fish carry mycobacteria and most stay that way but those that are weak may succumb to it and...

    Rainbows slow to settle in.

These rainbows often take a week or so to settle in to their new environment, so dont panic on that score. M.praecox due to mass breeding have become weaker generally and are not as hardy and disease resistant as they once were. However that does not mean anything is wrong with them when you...
