Washing hands before putting them in the tank!

As long as you rinse your hands then there's not going to be enough residue to cause problems.

    Water change practice

About half an hour to 45 mintues, I use the w/c time to inspect the tank, sort out problems, replant uprooted plants, syphon gravel ect, so I don't mind that it takes so long because I get to make sure the tank is in perfect order and, well...hey, it's fun! :D The wifes kettle gets a hammering...

    Water change practice

I feel left out here..... I change 25% of my 230l once a week I remove the 25% with a jug, replace with buckets that have each been dosed with a dechlor solution and topped off with boiling water from the kettle to take off the 'chill' of tap water. I have a 40l and 20l that I change about...

Surface Scum - Keeps Coming Back

I haven't run an airstone yet because it's a plant only tank so I wasn't too worried about clearing excess CO2, but if it means that it'll clear the film off the surface then there's no harm in an hour once the lights have gone out. :D I'll try it tonight, I just didn't know if I'd have to do...

Surface Scum - Keeps Coming Back

I've got the same on my 40l, do you have to run the airstone everyday to stop it forming again? or did just one night stop it completely?

    Greenline Closing Down

Just to add, this is only my personal opinion and probably means nothing, but greenline charged the most for P+P which wasn't a problem because they gave an excellent service for packing and care with keeping plants fresh

    Greenline Closing Down

I'd go for it Dacious, I was a bit confused though as they'd been preping customers for weeks about a part shut down of the nursery for heating work and then suddenly it's all over, It's still worth grabbing what you can whilst you can. Thanks Adam

Novice Looking For Advice - On a tight budget

I've just finished setting up my 2x 2ltr drinks bottle set up connected to a 3rd smaller bottle for protection from liquids coming in contact with each other. My tank is 230l, I'll never get a completely stable co2 level with a yeast system but I've got low light levels so I've got a bit of room...

should i give up marine for another planted tank?

well...I was dedicated with the 'idea' of a marine nano, I thought it would be like tropical but with salt, and coral. Thanks for the tip off, I know that no hobby is cheap/easy, but I've got the tank waiting to be used, I think I'll stick with tropical! :)

should i give up marine for another planted tank?

I've always considered the idea of starting a marine tank and thought that a nano would be a good starting point, not too sure of the idea now though, what went wrong with yours?

    My tank smells...

mine smells like our kitchen bin after I've filled it with used cat litter. There's no rotting plants, fish ect I clean the gravel everyday, waters changed 25% a week. Was fine when the carbon was in. Just not now

    My tank smells...

My 230l was filtered with carbon in my fluval 305 for the last year and the water had no smell at all, smelt quite nice actually! :D Since adding plants I took the carbon out because I was using ferts and didn't want the carbon to remove anything it shouldn't. That was a week ago and now the...

Today we had a power cut, first time in the 2 years our house has been built, only for about an hour which wasn't too bad but it did seem to be the longest hour of my life as I sat staring at my tank. (first day off work in 2 weeks and I can't make a cup of tea, watch jeremy Kyle ect all the...
