    Shrimp Rack build.....

Subbed. Something like this was on my project list a while back. As I have issues with RCS I've gone off the idea. A rack of smaller tanks for breeding small stuff such as CPD's is still on the cards. Looking forward to see how you put it all together.

    Shrimp and EI Dosing

On top of copper some people swear that high nitrates will see them off too. Others don't agree so much. I'm sure I read in the past that although they are sensitive to copper they actually need very small amounts something to do with blood regeneration. Either way. Many people successfully...

    First shrimp tomorrow!

Good luck to both of you. I've had 2 failed attempts in the past in smaller tanks of around 25l, this time it's going well in a 60l. Shrimps need stability, smaller volumes of water can swing drastically. Not that it can't be done, it just requires more vigilance and care. When you have berried...

    Do i have baby Amano's?

I posted this a while back. About a year ago, during my research upon returning to the hobby, I stumbled upon a thread of a members tank. He had a few YouTube videos too and had young Amano's in there. Fresh water planted, no intervention. I would say it is possible. The thread was on a US...

    Ramshorn outbreak

I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere they can be gassed. If anything like fish, high levels of co2 would restrict oxygen intake regardless of how much oxygen they have available.

    Ramshorn outbreak

If you had co2 and could rehouse the fish I guess you could gas them? The other option is a bunch of assassin snails.

RCS - Going rate in shops?

About 2.99 around me. Hoping my latest colony stay strong so I can offer to local members. Don't fancy posting though.

Poll - have you kept Sulawesi shrimp?

I think it is the cardinals (red with bluey/white dots) I've seen in a LFS in the past around £8 each. I struggle with cherries so these are out for me.

Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

Tank is done lol. I used a big old piece of bog wood that had Fissidens, weeping and flame on it. Been sitting in a plastic container in water in the garage over winter. Scrubbed it right back. Sure there's enough bits to get it going again. Also snagged a branchy piece of wood from a nano...

Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

I've not tried growing it taller myself yet, just hacked off what I had for the 1st big major trim, I've been following and contributing to this thread. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18388&start=60 Back on topic, just finished re doing the 60l Arc. May need to grab a few pots and some stems to finish it...

Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

It's all good, I'm just trying to consolidate data on the whole shrimp, oxygen and nitrates scene. Avoiding aggressive disturbance of the surface is common in planted to tanks to avoid outgassing of co2 yes but the plants should produce enough oxygen to saturate the water column...

Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

Many people are having success with co2 injection and EI and have healthy shrimp colonies. There have been threads about this in the past when it seemed the majority thought nothing of nitrate's and shrimp. I'm sure it was Clive that asked, "what does a nitrate stressed shrimp look like?" I...

Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

Hi Dincho, would you have any idea on nitrate levels that would cause these problems in RCS? I've seen several posts about people with RCS or CRS dosing full EI and having no issues. Also have seen posts from shrimp breeders that won't fert because of this. I was dosing EI levels but only 3...

Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

Funny this thread has come up again. I was chatting to an old local breeder, grabbing 20 cherries next week for my 3rd attempt. I think I'll try them in my 60l this time. That tank has been ticking over for a while.

    new baby shrimps

I believe they will revert to their wild colouration, typically a manky grey colour.

    new baby shrimps

Many could be hiding. You can use a piece of sponge to cover the intake pipe. Doesn't restrict flow too much and provides more biological area for bacteria and a grazing spot for the shrimp.
  19. S

    new baby shrimps

Apart from fish, the main predators to baby shrimp are filter intakes. Hopefully you have it covered.

    help a noob

Certain critters will only deal with certain types of algae, for some algae you may not find a suitable critter to munch on it. However, a more natural way of dealing with algae blooms is fixing the underlying cause of it. If you would care to post some photo's of this algae and details of the...

Odd behaviour and CO2. Fairly urgent!

Getting it dialed in is the frustrating part and dealing with the unstable co2 issues. Once you got it nailed it's well worth and beats liquid carbon hands down on a larger tank. If you can re home shrimpy in another tank it would allow you to tweak without worrying about him/her. It will take...

Odd behaviour and CO2. Fairly urgent!

With livestock in the tank you have to adjust gradually. Inverts, fish and plants will tell you which way you need to go. Shrimp will suffer before your fish. I run my drop checker a lot brighter than that but have no shrimp. Fish are fine. I can't count my bubble count on a rio 125 through a...

Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

My second colony of cherries has been wiped out now, not seen any fleas for a good week or 2. If you ever get to the bottom of this I would be interested in the outcome. Seems your losing them a few here and there as I did.

    Shrimps for a bowl?

Cherries are considered the one of the toughest. The colour morphs you listed that come from cherries can be a little more finicky, but not as finicky CRS.

    Shrimps for a bowl?

And I still have one going since the summer. It's been negelcted in an unheated garage, no water changes but I freshened it up yesterday, only a few snails and plants. Surprisingly the glosso is still going strong.

This sounds most likely. Spike to kill them off but by the time you tested water it's all zero.

Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

My last 2 batches of cherries both went south. I lose them 1 here n there and a batch of 15-20 usually fizzle out over several months. The last batch even had young but not seen those for weeks, I've given up on shrimp for a few months, maybe try again in the summer.

Has anyone managed to breed Amano shrimp

Been looking for it tonight at work, no luck. It was when I started researching planted tanks at the beginning of the year. I'm sure it was posted on plantedtank.net in the journals and the poster had clips on youtube. There were young Amanos swimming around the thermometer which were claimed...

    Snails and temperature

It's possible snail production could be on the increase with higher temps and also with over feeding. I know you raised your temp due to LFS advice after losing some livestock but I usually run my tanks 22-24. Never kept those fish you lost, Rainbows? so can't offer anything on that.

Has anyone managed to breed Amano shrimp

I remember watching a video on youtube of a planted tank, I think the journal was over on PT and they had Amano's breeding and young surviving in fresh water. If I come across it again I'll post it up.

New to shrimp with a few questions

We're kinda drifting off topic ;) 1st batch whole exo full of eggs. This batch had a molt with just 1 egg. I'm not sure if they usually molt whilst berried, I thought they would of waited. I have plenty of molting activity but have lost 2 males in the last week. I've halved my easy carbo dose...

New to shrimp with a few questions

Forgot that 1 Basil. Smaller volumes of water can swing dramatically very quickly. Larger volumes are more stable. 60l+ is best to maitain a breeding colony. With all this said, go ahead with your plan and grab around 10 or 15 or so cherry shrimp when your setup and ready. Many sellers go...

New to shrimp with a few questions

The plants you have chosen are attached to wood and rock so the substrate is irrelavent. I've not kept shrimp with akadama but I'm sure they will be fine. I've only kept and currently keep cherries and it maybe kinder to the shrimp and your back pocket if you try cherries first. CRS are a lot...

    Dying Amanos

Not kept Amano's but have had the same sort of thing going on with cherries. They seem fine for weeks then I start to lose them but it's like 1 every week or 2. If anything, I suspect the Easycarbo in my case, but again would expect more consistent death rates. If it was a water quality issue...

    Some of my Shrimp...

Having come back to aquatics after a long break I thought I missed the shrimp boom a few years back. They are fascinating creatures to observe, almost more fun to watch than fish at times. I only have cherries atm but plan on having CRS, Snowballs, Tigers, Blue pearls and OEBT's when I get my...

    Liquid Carbo + Shrimps

Sticking to the recommend dose should be fine with cherries. I dose 1ml in 30l tanks which is a little over. Only problem I'm having is I seem to lose females once berried. Easycarbo or not, I'm not sure.

    Dennerle 60litre - planted/co2/shrimp

Testing the water with cherries would be easier on the back pocket in the event of disaster. If your well planted and Co2 seems to be at stable levels then go for it with the cherries after a week of the tank ticking over. A few months of good water changes will keep on top of the tannins. As...

    Dennerle 60litre - planted/co2/shrimp

    1. Some will say your wasting money with test kits. If your well planted the plants will assist the cycle of the tank. 2. Wood is best soaked for as long as possible, changing water frequently. It usually stains the water with a brown colour from the tannins. Green is not normal. Could it be an...

Possible causes of cherry shrimp deaths

Shrimp are considered more sensitive to water conditions than fish so while the fish are fine with co2 level it could be too much for the shrimp. Untreated tap water is going to carry copper too. Use a decent dechlorinator which will handle copper. I use the API brand which is very economical...

    Assassin Snail & Reproduction.

I aquired 2 of these fellas a couple of months locally with a batch of cherry shrimp although I think 1 was bagged as an empty shell so only 1 snail when I got them home. Cherry shrimp not breeding

I'm having the same sort of thing and 1st time shrimper. Started with 6 from LFS then added around 20 little ones from a local breeder.
