    Which one?

Hard to say. It went into a 125l tank but then I found out we were moving soon so setup a smaller tank. It dried out a little then went into a 60l. Only slight clouding which soon goes. Just fill slowly.

    Which one?

Just to add, having used 1+3 I'm torn between the two. Eco Complete is heavy, gritty and holds plants well. It's a joy to plant in although I find the grain sizes vary a lot. Oliver Knot is lighter, soft round balls. It holds plants ok but I think it allows better circulation in the substrate...

    Which one?

AFAIK, 1 & 3 don't leach ammonia. 1 is kinda soft and easily crumbles. Not used 2 & 4 although I believe 2 leaches ammonia. Have a good read through the substrate forum. Plenty of discussion about the same thing. It pretty much boils down to how much you want to spend on a substrate.

New Tank Unsure On Substrate And Need Help Please

Do you have a budget for the substrate? I guess this is what it really boils down to. £10, £100+? You could go the Tesco kitty litter route and plant out your tank well for the same price you would spend on a high end substrate alone. Don't get me wrong I would love to try out all these ada...

    new substrate

I planted my Rio 125 yesterday with the Tesco cat litter, it was a bit of a pain to rinse but was ok to plant in. Although it's quite light there were no problems with floaters after filling. There are stickies in this forum for cat litter and akadama. Many people use both and find them cheap...

Changing from gravel to proper substrate?

I would be inclined to siphon the old gravel out with the water than scoop it out afterwards. A lot less work.

    Cat litter

Looks good will go this route for the next big one. Just planted my 125 with Tesco's kitty litter and as I was slowly filling whilst planting it felt like I was planting in quicksand but everything stayed in place pretty well. I was worried about it's lightness but it does a good job. 3...

    Cat litter

Just finished rinsing through 2 bags of this for my Rio 125. I can still smell the perfume in it in the tank. While rinsing I noticed how light it is. I hope planting and filling goes smoothly but dreading turning the filter on.

ADA Substrate Additives - How Important & Which

 Fanboy woot! You can grow most (if not all) plants without any of those additives. There was a busy thread around about these additives and their usefulness. I'll link it here if I stumble on it.

    Amount of substrate- question

I used 2 bags of eco complete in my Rio 125, around 20l I think although it is quite raised at the rear (3-4"). You may need a little more but wait for further confirmation or correction of my post. ;)
