    Guppies strange behaviour

I would investigate the P@H tank that you had the guppies from and see how they are getting on there. Guppies are virtually bullet proof. If you have water quality issues your tetras should give the early warning signs, not the guppies. And as to what Hinch posted about the filter. 100% uptime...

    bromo blue + fish

I think Angel fish breeders use bromo blue to help prevent fungus spreading through eggs. Isn't it also used in white spot treatments? As Clive posted, a couple of drops from a DC is no problem.

    Stocking levels

Some would say your close to your limit's if you have not already hit them. Angels and clown loach grow large and clowns should really be kept in groups. Having livebearers in there is a potential bio load increase but I guess the larger fish keep them in check. Anyway, 6 cherry barbs is such a...

    Dwarf gourami pair breeding

Bare bottom tanks with sponge filters work well as for breeding most species, but it maybe too late for that this time around. Make sure there are hiding spots for the female to take cover. I remember having a go at these many years ago. If my memory serves me well, when the fry get to around...

    CPDs Jumping

Hardly see mine near the surface, even at feeding time they tend to hover in the lower 1/2 of the water column. Never imagined them to be jumpers.

    Ottos

Have you tried softening up the veggies in a cup of boiling water for a minute or so?
  7. S

    Ottos

Otto's love diatoms. They won't touch GDA, GSA they will munch on dead BBA though. I think most have success with oto's. Fresh stock should be avoided for a week or so. They will munch on tabs as well as other veggy based foods. Great little fish too.

    Celestial pearl danio

I've heard males can squabble over territory. I've had 2M's+4F's in a 28l nano for over 12 months. No casualties or bullying going on, all still fit and healthy. Will be attempting a breeding program in the summer if I can net the critters. I added a few young guppies to the cpd...

    Galaxy Rasboras and feeding

Hikari Micro Pellets and frozen micro bloodworms. Mine love em both and the HMP's float a good while and sink fairly slowly.

    Cherry Barbs and Guppy fry

Depends on how much cover you have for the fry!
  11. S

    Celestial Pearl Danio (CPD)s)

No chance unless your tank is full of plants and well mature. The parents are avid egg eaters. I've had some fry in the past but the tank run with a "survival of the fittest" policy and no attempts made to rescue them as I had nowhere to try and raise them. I've not seen any fry for a good few...

    Celestial Pearl Danio (CPD)s)

They vary from £2.45 to as much as £4.50 per, depending on size and where you buy them. They are a small and rather pretty fish with great personality. They thrive in planted tanks but can be quite shy. They tend to hide a lot. Males can be territoraiaI and some people report conflicts between...

Randy otos getting jiggy?...I've got babies!

From the zoom I would of guessed around 1 - 1.5cm. I edited my post to enquire about the glass thickness after watching it again. I only spotted 1 oto fry once in one of my tanks, it was about 2-3mm long and kind of a light golden orangey colour. The only other fish in there were young angels...

Randy otos getting jiggy?...I've got babies!

That looks rather large for a 5 day old oto fry from when you posted your jiggy post, but there again how thick is the glass?. It would have to be from an earlier spawning which would explain it's size. Grats, either way.

Randy otos getting jiggy?...I've got babies!

Re: Randy otos getting jiggy? They are like Cory's, assuming the T postion so it sounds about right. Eggs are adhesive and usually laid on plants.

    Gourami's

I've not checked your journal so I'm not sure on your flow but they tend to favour slower moving water. Surface plants make them feel homely but not essential.
  18. S

    Stunted fish

Confined surroundings, poor water quality, poor diet/underfeeding. It's a broad term applied to many situations like a goldfish in a bowl, to weaker fry being pushed off food and not growing as well as their siblings.

New fish at LFS - settling in time.

Your question was understood and I answered it with my thoughts. The quarantine question was just a curiosity. Talking of which, did you manage to bottle trap the oto's?
  20. S

New fish at LFS - settling in time.

With fresh imported "finicky" species I would leave them in their tanks for a week or so, like Oto's for example. Gouramis I would consider pretty tough, just use common sense and leave them there if they look bad in anyway. If they look good, active and alert I say go for it. Would you...

    Neon Tetra Breeding?

It's not that hard to get them to spawn but the eggs are light sensitive. Hatching is the next hurdle followed by the hardest part, feeding the fry.
  22. S

    Neon Tetras

Sorry I wouldn't know where to start, just checked through fish forum. I think it was an OT post or two possibly in an unrelated thread.

    Your most expensive fish?

I'm a cheapskate around £7 for clown loach years ago. Funnily enough I've spent more on a single plant recently £14 for a pot of Vesuvius
  24. S

    Neon Tetras

Depends how long the filter was left not running without food - Ammonia. Also when you restocked to the lighter bio load your bacteria would die back to handle your current bio load, think of it as not enough food to go around. What size is the tank and what filteration are you using...

    Otos - 30L Suitable??

No comment on harlequins. As for Nitrates and Oto's. I dose EI in all tanks and have no issues. Oto's are know to be very sensitive to ammonia though.
  26. S

    Otos - 30L Suitable??

Got 4 otos in with 6 Cpds in a 28l aquastart 320. Well planted and slightly overgrown. No deaths or water quality issues. If you add them make sure the tank is fairly well established.
  27. S

    How old are your fish?

Just come back to fishkeeping so nothing old right now. I do have my 6 cpd's since February. They were super skinny with sunken bellies and I convinced myself I would lose some, they all survived, doubled in size and are nice and plump now.

    Light: rest vs oxygen

Extending the photoperiod will affect plants more than the fish I think. More light = more demand for co2 so you risk melting and co2 related algae.
  29. S

    Otos and Tiger Barbs

It's a tricky one. Most surface to mid species are usually ruled out but oto's tend to favour lower areas and planted areas, they may be left alone. I'd find it hard to trust the barbs though.

    Female Guppys Dying

Ok not too small then. A smaller tank and they would of poisoned themselves rather fast. I would of ran this for a week without any water changes then stocked 1 pair of guppies. Run that for 3-4 weeks before adding anything else. You need a source of amonnia for the bacteria to feed off in order...
  31. S

    Female Guppys Dying

What is the size of the tank and what filteration are you using. Also is the tank planted? Daily water changes? how much? Are you using any water treatment products? Feeding how much, how often. Any uneaten food left in the tank? A pic is a 1,000 words, but sounds like amonnia to me too.
  32. S

    Raising Otos

Moving them to another tank would be better for their survival, I would presume a mature tank would be best. They will find their own food in a mature planted tank. If you have a recently setup tank infested with diatoms that maybe ideal. :D I've come across quite a few threads on forums and...

Can I ask for advice on dwarf chain loach / pearl gourami

Re: Can I ask for advice on dwarf chain loach / pearl gouram I've kept Pearl Gourami's in my fish keeping past. They make a great centre piece fish in a larger community aquarium. Not really fussy or demanding and quite hardy. They do grow to a good size but I never had problems with them...

    Angelfish with oto's??

As they mature and a couple pair off, the other inmates will be pushed to the opposite end of the tank. If you had 4/4 all males then there could well be a bit of bickering as they mature. That would be unlucky though.
  35. S

    Can endless change sex?

I've heard of it in livebearers but usually old females turning into males unless they were just late developers. Not heard of males changing to females but I guess that doesn't mean it can't/won't happen.
  36. S

Can you gas a labyrinth fish?

I could be way off but would say yes. It's not just down to them being able to breath atmospheric air it's what the excess co2 does to the bloodstream that stops them from absorbing the oxygen. I'm sure sure somone more clued up than me can elaborate on that.
  37. S

    Babies

Good news. I was planning on pulling some raggy plants from my tank but I stopped when I noticed a small Oto fry a few nights ago just resting on the bogwood. Not seen any for the last few days though.

    Help! Angels laying eggs.

You could tell her she needs a second tank or they will die. They will spawn again so don't worry about that. What you have now are known as "wrigglers". They're consuming their yolk sacks so won't need feeding until they are free swimming which is when they will likely perish. If...

My angel fish, any wild blood?

I think Jimmy told me the Altums at TGM are wild caught. Garuf That's a nice looking F1  I have a soft spot for golden pearlscales.

    Enough algae?

This is the important point to remember. Consider the algae as a treat. When it comes to algae they eat Diatoms only but will graze on other algaes that are dead. Mine get a wafer every couple of days. I'll have to get em going on some green stuff soon.

    First fauna

I'm with Bob. If it was me I would go with fish 1st then if all is good in a week, grab the shrimp. Snails I'd drop in anytime. I dont have invasions of pest snails but like my assassins. I have some pest snails in 2 other aquariums but waiting for the numbers to pick up before I start thinning...

    First fauna

Oto's do well in small groups so 4-6 would be a good start although you may wish to opt for more. I believe they can be very sensitive to water conditions so ammonia needs to be in check. I've never kept Amano's but find Assassin snails to be "tough as old boot's". I've recently added 4 to my...

Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

Well finally I have fry in my nano. 5-6 fry have been regulary seen hanging out at the back of the tank above the stems over the weekend. The fry about 2-4mm and silvery grey in colour. The tank has been running about 4 months and fish were juvies when added. Funny thing is they got spotted...

Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

I have 6 CPD's in a 28l planted nano (2m/4f)with about a dozen RCS. Had them almost 2 months and the males seem to be colouring up nicely. Great to watch. :D Signs of courtship but no signs of fry.I have a small group of frogbit for surface cover for fry but no signs yet. Early days though...
