Yellow Shrimp - Or RCS - Sexing

Interesting,I thought I might be losing some, I could prob count 15, and that is from 3 mothers. When berried it looks like 20-30 eggs in situ, but not seen that amount of babies. Same time,I spot one or two each time that look tiny compared to some others younsters in the tank (maybe a few...

Had 4 mothers all given birth. And re-berried. Few babies, was thinking there would be loads, same time some are still very very small, and very well hiden.

    What Kills Amano Shrimp?

I have a pair of clear 25l containers if you need bud. I remember you mentioning SA, if so understand gearing tank towards that? Otherwise it looked like a great tank to me, I say hang onto it.

thanks, yeah must only be a few days old (berried wise), as first time I have seen her, Today she is out and feeding like others. I can take Guppy out, is baby. And has helped with my alien bug problem. Just curious how to spot a female (outside of being berried).

Yellow Shrimp - Or RCS - Sexing

Re: Yellow Shrimp - Or RCS whilst posting, thought I would try take a pic, and what looked to be a shrimp hiding under a log, (thought unusual as my shrimp are always out and about and very active), pointing a torch into the crevice, and bingo, looks berried, loads of small eggs like by the fan...

Yellow Shrimp - Or RCS - Sexing

I am fairly new to shrimp and nearly a month in to having shrimp, I have wondered how they are sexed, I have found some of my shrimp have a area behind the head like a sack, which I read might be for the development of eggs? But they are not berried, noticed they have a deep yellow line along...

    Daphnia Farm in the garden...pondering....

Think Daphnia needs to be introduced (LFS usually sell bags of them), whereas bloodworm and Mos Larvae ususally just appear.

    Red Ramshorn Questions

Think they need two, are hermaphroditic if there are two, bang will deffo breed unless you get a sub adult who has already tangoed 9they store sperm I beleive). PH, i dont think there is water where they wont be happy to be honest. PH high or low, Pretty hardy buggers. I see eggs everywhere in...

    Naidids or other

See, I saw this: http://youtu.be/OEbPd-hopgY These do not wiggle like that at all, more like caterpillers, head moving about, and that and then body follows. Same when swimming too, dart in straight lines and change direction with head first. Hence thought, they might not be nematodes...

    Stainless Steel Wire Mesh Safe

316 stainless I beleive is the one to go for, wont rust. Mind read that 304L (Low Carbon) also doesnt rust and is more readily available, but 316 for sure is safe.

    Naidids or other

Yesterdaday when feeding my shrimp, when the flake was being broken up by the shrimp into small chunks, I noticed what looked like a glass like worm run too one of the small flakes, and looked to be tucking in. Looked to be part of the redmoor root some alive. was 2mm at most. It was...

    cattapa leaves for shrimp

Thanks mate, will deffo gives thee a go, i would prefer to use local alternatives, but hey ho, ordered enough leaves to see me out a whilse I think so all is well yeah, i tend to do 20-30% weekly so I could also chuck in a alder cone in a 5 litre bottle as I always prepare water the night...

    Do shrimp eat nematodes/copepods?

These nematodes are tiny, id say 2mm at most and thin as a hair strand. Only see them moving with deep concentration, but in all honesty, not seen my shrimp pick anything off the glass.

    Do shrimp eat nematodes/copepods?

As title really, i had some guppy fry in a tank, to try control this, did seem to work, didnt see any, removed them when I added shrimp, and seem to be seeing some nematodes back again, and now bloody copepods to add which I had only see in my other nano. Just wondered if shrimp do take them...

    cattapa leaves for shrimp

http://www.aldercones.com/ interesting read. Alder cones reducing PH. My onlyy concern is that in water changes I will effectively be bumping up the ph which would be stressfull to the fish, unless I treat with cones/leaves before the water changes and ensure PH is level?

    CBS tds in low tech???

Re: CBS tds in low tech??? Yes it would mate, if you added/dosed once a week minerals, and only toped up water lost to evaporation then, yes, more then likely the TDS will gradually rise and rise and rise, lol. Water changes would be required to control this. Or something in the tank...

    CBS tds in low tech???

Re: CBS tds in low tech??? Not much help buddy, never kept CRS so others can advise, am new to RCS as such, Agree with above, i have a TDS meter which I use to monitor at water changes, technically speaking, if you were just to top up wiith tap water the TDS would rise be it slowly as you...

    CBS tds in low tech???

Re: CBS tds in low tech??? Lucky chaps, mine is 350 out the tap. If it was 50-150 I would be overjoyed, lol. My conditioner bumps up the TDS by 50, so test water after treatment.

    cattapa leaves for shrimp

Apparently the size can be controlled by growing in pots, the more space given the bigger it grows.
  32. S

    cattapa leaves for shrimp

Prob hhave to grow it indoors, but meh, if 1 leaf lasts a month, then one plant in a large pot will suffice me thinks. 2 for a constant supply. will have to keep indoors in winter, but outside for summer.

    cattapa leaves for shrimp

Ordered some tea bags for my rasbora tank, it might help reduce my PH which will hopefully be wholly beneficial to the fish. Will order some leaves specifically for the shrimp tank. Has anyone tried growing it as the seeds are available? A young tree could probably provide enough leaves to...

BUG IDENTIFICATION: white dots darting around

Introduced willow moss recently, wonder if it has come in with them, otherwise not a clue on how they got in. Same with Nematodes in my other tank. Plants seem to be the only assumption.

BUG IDENTIFICATION: white dots darting around

Ok searching around it looks most like copepods. Rasbora seem to ignore them. Hmmm, maybe another job for my guppy fry.

BUG IDENTIFICATION: white dots darting around

Hey, my other tank suffered Nematodes, my other nano, today during water change noticed little white dots darting around tank on glass. Really fast buggers. Anyone know what they are, are they a worry?

Nematodes - where the hell did they come from

Hope they kinda go, as I dont fancy keeping fish in there permanantly. I hear nematodes live within the subtrate in which case dwarf corys could have been useful.
  44. S

Nematodes - where the hell did they come from

Added two fry from my main tank, and within an hour they picking them out one by one. After a few hours actually plucking them off the glass. Win. Free food. Hopefully a week or two should do it.
  45. S

Nematodes - where the hell did they come from

More looking see most or bulk of the population are at the surface around surface scum or the waterline between glass and surface. So tiny/thin my eyes struggle, hence I think guppy fry would be better then adult fish who would most likely ignore I would have thought.
  46. S

Nematodes - where the hell did they come from

My tank what 3-4 weeks old now. Only snails, and they the only additions I have made of late, but I have never really looked for them. Found some snail eggs in tank, and whilst scoping them out saw these tiny 1-2mm white worm creatures on glass and soon looked like they were gliding through...

    microscopic mystery animal

Can you not introduce a small fish for a short period of time, I would have thought it would take care of it. Young Guppy or something?
  49. S

    microscopic mystery animal

Solely snails in tank? Assume if there were fish these would have been munched? Or are they too small maybe only fry would see?

    First shrimp tomorrow!

I have loads of Spinach, in the garden, so they dont go down to well? Might even grow a stinging nettle in a pot if it goes down well.

    Ramshorn outbreak

When I ordered some it came in a short cut 14mm plastic plumbing pipe (about 8cm) with wet tissue blocking one end, stuffed with snails, and other side stuffed with wet tissue, maybe water squirted in. Then sandwich bag, Then posted in envelop. Thought it was perfect really.

    Ramshorn outbreak

Will try get one when home. Very similar But Thats the pic the seller used, lol
  53. S

    Ramshorn outbreak

yeah, when they become a problem, will start thinning out i think, will be on here giving some away. I find the red are really attractive for a snail/invert. i have one that is a deep deep red, which is quite stunning really.
  54. S

    Ramshorn outbreak

Dont they breath at the surface anyway and store air in the top part of the shell before they dive (like a dive tank)? so would gassing work, as I would assume they would just make to the surface for air :?:
  55. S

    Ramshorn outbreak

Mate, if you desparate, I am more then happy to take as many off your hands you want rid of?
  56. S

What to do with Assassin Snails?

I just bought some Red Ram Snails, wonder how long before they become a problem, lol, so agree sell them, loads of people in the same shoes as you previously, who need Assasins to sort their snail issue.
