    EI ratio question

Yes agree, well that's what I later found out. However a lot of articles I was reading mentioned rations of 10:1 which is why I posted the questions. I still not having great success with some plants in the tank which just melted away over a few weeks so I guess something is still not quite...

    Dry ferts shelf life

Thanks just got 2.5L of de-ionised water from Sainsbury for £1, remixed and within hour all mixed in with no settlement. Thanks Darrel.

    Dry ferts shelf life

Per Perfect thanks Darrel, we have some precipitation with our solution. If boiling then what would I strain it with (how fine should the strainer be)? thanks again

    Dry ferts shelf life

A quick follow on question regarding this. Should I be using just normal tap water to make up my dosing mix? Been reading about people use RO/distiller water, or boiling the water etc.

    Iron deficiency?

Ta, so we should be putting in more than 0.7ppm a week? Any suggestions or should I just up it to 1ppm a week and see? Can you put in too much fe?
  6. swackett

    Iron deficiency?

We are dosing 10ppm of MgSO4 a week
  7. swackett

    Iron deficiency?

We are now using TNC Fe which uses DTPA, should this be sufficient in our water? Thing is I am still seeing transparent new leaves on some plants, which I believe is an Iron issue, or do I have this all wrong?
  8. swackett

    Iron deficiency?

well Well the issue is with new leaves, also the old ones break down and die, the leaves on the effected plants just look more yellow than green
  9. swackett

    Iron deficiency?

Our pH out of the tap is about 7.2 to 7.4, after 24 hours its 8.2 to 8.4. Measured during lighting period with injected co2 its 6.9 to 7.0
  10. swackett

    Iron deficiency?

I read that as we have alkaline water (pH > 7) the chelating agent used in Seachem iron (EDTA) breaks down in water with pH over 7
  11. swackett

    Iron deficiency?

We dose iron alongside Tropica Premium on Monday and Wednesday, and dose the rest on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. The water seems to tint yellow by the end of the week, not sure if this is caused by the iron not breaking down properly? Are the levels I'm dosing correct. I am seeing GSA on...

    Iron deficiency?

Have had the new setup running now for 2 months, and I am still seeing what I think maybe iron deficiency with new leaves looking transparent with yellowish tips. I'm running a 100 litre tank with an eheim 350T filter (so about 10x flow). Injected co2 on before lights and off before lights...

    Dry ferts shelf life

Should i consider buying more if its gone lumpy?
  14. swackett

    Dry ferts shelf life

Interesting, our containers are not air tight and the kno3 and kh2po4 has lumps in. The mgso4 is okay. If it has lumps is it still okay as not sure that question was answered in the the thread you posted.
  15. swackett

    Dry ferts shelf life

Do dry ferts have a shelf life? We are using some we bought over 5 years ago and are still seeing some plant deficiencies even dosing ei levels, Jenner wondering if it's not as potent over time. Ta
  16. swackett

    Sulphate levels

Okay I am looking at levels of 20ppm or so, so it sounds pretty safe at that level then.
  17. swackett

    Sulphate levels

Just wondering if you can have too much sulphate in an aquarium and is it harmful to fish? I dose mgso4 and am thinking of dosing k2so4 as well, and so will be adding lots of sulphate (so4) to the tank water. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk

Does this make sense (sorting a cock up)

Would it just be easier to throw your existing mix away and start again. You will use 0.6tsp of KH2PO4 in the new solution and 6tsp of KN03, rather than add another 11 or so tsp to try and correct your existing mix.
  20. swackett

Does this make sense (sorting a cock up)

I was going trough the same as you, hence my thread on ratio as my Po4 was way too high. So based on what you want which is 1ppm of po4 and 10ppm of no3 per dose you will need 12 tsp of kn03 and 1.25tsp of kh2p04 which will give you your 10:1 ratio per 10ml dose, so if you want to do a 20ml...
  21. swackett

Does this make sense (sorting a cock up)

What are you dosing? KH2PO4 and KN03? if so are you trying to get to the magic 10 : 1 ratio for ppm as I maybe wrong but thought this was for K and PO4 rather than NO3 and PO4.
  22. swackett

Does this make sense (sorting a cock up)

HI mate, What quantities are in the bottle now and what dosing are you aiming for?
  23. swackett

    EI ratio question

Yes thanks, the 10:1 ratio works with PPM as far as I can tell. By looking at the EI guide that Clive wrote, 30ppm of NO3 and 3ppm of PO4, so 10 : 1. Yes I understand its not an exact science, but just curious :)
  24. swackett

    EI ratio question

Is the 10:1 ratio the ratio of NO3 compared to PO4 in terms of PPM, rather than the quantity of the salt you add to your solution bottle as the percentage of NO3 in KNO3 is not the same as the percentage of PO4 in KH2PO4 ? So my question regarding K2S04 is because I think using just KNO3 and...

    EI ratio question

Adding up the Mg, it looks like i need to add 27 tsp to 500ml of water to get total 10ppm a week dosing 10ml 3 times a week. Is this right as it seems a lot of tsp's to me. Also how do you get the 10:1 balance using KN03 and KH2PO4 ? Do I need to use K2SO4?
  26. swackett

    EI ratio question

So the 10:1 ratio for no3 and po4 is what to aim for?
  27. swackett

    EI ratio question

Thanks Darrell, should I follow the article by Clive as that seems to have 10:1 ratio seems more in line with what I have read? https://www.ukaps.org/index.php?page=dosing-with-dry-salts
  28. swackett

    EI ratio question

I've read that I should be aiming for 10:1 ratio of NO3 : PO4, however is this really NO3 : PO4 or a ratio of N : P and is this old advice? Also if PO4 is higher than that does that cause an imbalance and thus can cause algae issue? Then again I've read that you can add more PO4 without issues...

    Last go for some help

No I think its more like medium to low. We used to do big weekly water changes, but then found it too laborious every week and before you know it you have forgotten one week, then the next week, etc, so wanted an easier life rather than give up on the whole thing
  33. swackett

    Last go for some help

Yeah it is 10w. Interestingly the Hagen website mentions its 7.5w !

    Last go for some help

No it just has an on and off, funny you mentioned the dimmers as we talking about dimming the lights last night when the light went off at 10 and plants and fish were plunged into sudden darkness. It would be nice to dim them down and up over 30 minutes
  35. swackett

    Last go for some help

At the moment the lighting period is 6 hours, so maybe I'll try that with specialised as suggested. Do you count 6 hours as a short lighting period?

But if i remember rightly with EI you do a massive water change each week to reset the water column.

    Last go for some help

So I could also do the same with Tropica Specialised, maybe start off with more premium and slowly increase the amount of specialised I use week on week. So I could do the following and monitor algae growth? Week 1 Premium - 10ml Specialised - 2ml Week 2 Premium - 8ml Specialised - 4ml Week...

    Last go for some help

Agree with you both, as I used dry salts on our old 240L tank, but an £11 bottle of Tropica will last us 30 weeks at 10ml a week. We still have some of the dry salts in a cupboard as i came across it the other week.

  43. swackett

    Last go for some help

Ta, the Tropica bottle states for 100l tank I should use 10 doses a week. Maybe I'll start with one every day for the week then up to 1 a day and see how things go.

    Last go for some help

Thanks for your replies, I've done EI in the past. Been away for a few years and now trying again . The led is the standard one that comes with the Roma, so 10w, not sure of the colour temp though. So maybe a dose of tropic liquid ferts once a week to start with?

    EI on new tank setup

Matt, Not sure I can, I have an arcadia luminaire with 4x24w T5 tubes, so I already have the other 2 tubes off ( i may get those going for a 2 hour burst midway through the photo period later) Would you recommend upping the dose in this case? Steve

    EI on new tank setup

Thanks for info guys. The tank is not too sparse so I guess I should half dose for a week or two and watch plant growth, I have the following plants so far: Glossostigma elatinoides Echinodorus tenellus Rotala macrandra Rotala rotundifolia Ludwigia arcuata Micranthemum micranthemoides...

    EI on new tank setup

Hi, I've just setup a new tank and am using EI as a basis to dose it as explained by Clive in his article. How do you dose for the first week or so as during this period I will need to do regular (daily for the first week) water changes and so this must dilute the dose? Thanks Steve

Tropica Plant Nutrition + How do you dose it?

I agree , TPN+ is expensive if you dose highly each day and with dry ferts you do have control, it's just the principal is "If you give enough ferts to the plants then algae should go and plants should be happy :) " so you could in theory increase the dose of TPN+ to remove algae. I use TPN+...

Tropica Plant Nutrition + How do you dose it?

Hi I've just started out on the EI approach and having read various articles I'm slightly baffled by that comment. I thought as long as you put in a given amount of any type of fertiliser (dry or liquid) to ensure the plants do not starve then algae should not be issue as the plants will be...
