    Quick Q...

Hi Alex, tropica premium is just trace elements, better to use tropica specialised as it contains NPK as well, or a combination of them both on alternate days.
  4. tim

What am i deficient in? Stem plant old leaves not doing well.

Profito contains no nitrogen or phosphate source, could be either of these ?

    A Very Lazy Man....

1/3rd of the recomended ei dose has worked well for my low techs, 25% water change weekly, but when I'm busy they do tend to go a week or 3 without a water change with no algae blooms etc etc.

    Potassium deficiency???

Is that the old growth from when the plant was purchased ? Most of my stems shed the emersed leaves and they look like that. You can add a few pinches off k2so4 a couple of times a week see if it makes a difference.

    Ferts = Ammonia?

If the Tds was 974 from the lfs it could just be deaths from shrimp already weakend from not so great conditions, IMO the lfs will generally point to ammonia in your tank so they don't have to replace the livestock, a drop of 700 odd Tds could likely finish off already poorly kept shrimp...

    Water Changes and EI dosing

My approach if doing daily water changes is to dose macro and micro on alternate days as normal but seven days a week instead of five, I generally carry out water changes twice weekly anyway and I've always dosed macro after waterchange and followed on from there. As for the untreated water...

Ei dosing for the first time, need help with quantities and how often

If you dose liquid carbon the tank technically becomes high tech(added carbon source) you may need larger water changes and dose according to instructions to keep the plants healthy. I dose my low techs 3 times macro 2 times trace weekly at third dose makes no odds to me as I feed fish and dose...
  19. tim

Ei dosing for the first time, need help with quantities and how often

Mix it up as per instructions, then dose around a third of the amount of the full dose, works for my low techs with around 25% waterchange twice a week.

    tropica ferts

Hey Ryan, green contains NPK(macro) orange is trace(micro) you can does them on alternate days like Ei, you can also split the dose over the week like ei.

Well API States you need stress coat plus or chloramine can be converted to ammonia.
  25. tim

    just started ei, fish dying

Worth noting Thames water may be adding chloramine as well as chlorine at the moment due to floods etc etc, are you using dechlorinator that neutralises both.

    Making a New Fertilzer.

Hi hoggie, it's a good recipie IMO, I've used it for a year or so on low techs and smaller tanks, it's quite heavy on the potassium nitrate, so I figured tweaking wouldn't hurt working ok so far in my tanks for a couple of months or so, I do use ro to make it though I noticed the mix turns brown...

    Making a New Fertilzer.

    Making a New Fertilzer.

Hi hoggie, are you looking to tweak your macro solution ? You don't specify where you'll be adding traces from, quite a few diy recipes on James planted tank page which I'm sure you've seen are you looking for a lower nitrogen based fert or something else entirely ? :-)

    Dry vs Diluted

Nah, I still use magnesium sulphate most of my water hardness comes from calcium (London) I put it down to my teaspoon being bigger than Cegs and my water changes being smaller.
  34. tim

    Dry vs Diluted

Liquid for me spent 6 months dosing dry and ended up with a tds of over a 1000 not surprised my rilli shrimp perished, not blaming the dry dosing method but if ya plants ain't using it they ain't using it.
  35. tim

Why dose ferts daily if manufactures advise weekly?

Some people will find it a lot harder, just like weekly or twice weekly water changes, feeding fish has instant results they can be seen to eat it, also lfs still hung up on removing nitrogen phosphorus etc etc from tanks so adding daily would make them shudder, all branded ferts are aimed...

Overdosing macros turning red plants green?

    Unbalanced planted tank... but why?

Soon as you add liquid carbon the tank becomes high tech so you'll need to dose accordingly and carry out regular large water changes. I have double dosed a tank with Vallis and it was fine, doesn't always work though.

    EI Dry Salts Dosing

Give it a couple of weeks, you may need to add magnesium to your dosing, after reading a couple of darrels threads most of the hard water in uk comes from calcium (I think) so could be a lack of magnesium.
  45. tim

Stopped carbo, (only) Java ferns struggling

May just be adjusting to the lack of carbon, your rooted plants could be using carbon available from the substrate, I would trim off all melting leaves and wait for re growth microsorums are normally fairly hardy so should adapt.

  58. tim

    EI Low plant mass

EI is designed to provide an excess dosing full amount won't cause problems insufficient co2 poor flow distribution and too much light will long as you have those sorted your onto a winner mate personally I would dose full amount that's a very nice tank
  59. tim

    how much and when..

well from what i understand and ive been reading for a year mate and still baffled lol your ei lush mix should be sufficient at recommended dose as your not injecting co2 dont have silly amounts of light and certainly seem to keep up with your tank maintainence the phosphorous shouldnt be needed...
