You are better off shooting in raw mode if you want to post process your images especially if you have under exposure. My advice would be to try improve your background lighting.
If you want to see some great tank shots look at Mark Evans posts on the forum.
Trouble with jpegs is you have...
Mark you can't use raw as a standard for entries as it produces a very flat low contrast, unsaturated, unsharpened image. This might be the pure unadulterated image data but it is not what your eyes are seeing. Your eyes see more contrast and saturation and better dynamic range.
Even with film...
Your lucky to live in NZ mate. There's a quality to the life out there that I feel I miss in the UK. If it were allowed it would be great to get a camera underwater in the springs.
I've been to the South Island of NZ 3 times. I have a great excuse as my family moved to Auckland years ago but I live in the UK. It's an awesome place but then there is amazing countryside everywhere in the world if you just go look for it. I could live the rest of my life in the North of...
Looks like I could spend a day there. No chance of snorkelling I bet. I got as far west as Totranui beach. Kicked myself ever since for not going all the way. Nice pics, feel free to post some more. How much water comes out of the spring?
Nikon D200 with Singh Ray ND filters. I have a 2 and 3 stop hard and soft ND filter. So that's 4 in all. Bought them online from the states (http://www.singh-ray.com/grndgrads.html). Excellent quality. I think I was using a 17 - 35mm f2.8 lens.
Thanks for looking.
Hi
I've been stitching together some panoramas in photoshop. They tend to have edges that need cropping after the process of stitching and blending. This image is 7 Nikon D200 Nef files taken in portrait orientation and stitched together. Usually I'd crop out the white areas. (ps. i have...
It's an iPhone 4. The OS software can take HDR images which are ok but I find them to lack contrast. There are a couple of Apps that do the same and do a much better job. They can take a few shots in quick succession and automatically or manually select the dark and light areas of the...
Sorry Diver but you are wrong and ceg4048 is correct regarding VR and tripods. VR is designed for handheld photography, not for tripods. Your images will have reduced sharpness if you leave VR on. Always turn VR off when your camera is mounted on a tripod or it will affect image quality.
I 2nd this recommendation. I bought this lens for my D70 a few years ago. It's an awesome lens, absolutely pin sharp and very useful for general photography not just macro. When I bought my D70 (now retired) it came with the kit lens. I could not believe the improvement in image quality I...
I'm pretty new to photographing tanks so I'm sure there's more experience out there to answer the question. However the main benefit I saw when I tried one was reducing reflections and the main drawback was an increase in exposure required.
Ceg I agree photographers who only shoot jpg probably don't need raw. I just like to maximise quality and raw allows that flexibility. This is not a discussion I wanted to have, I wanted to discuss with forum members a way to easily correct distortion.
However some of the things you state as...
Clive I think you could improve the dynamic range if you used RAW (but you have lost the data and cannot retrieve it) and processed the file properly. The stem has no detail in the shadows and is pitch black, the bubbles are at the other extreme and quite specular, however they would be...
Clive - Not everyone needs RAW. RAW vs Jpeg has nothing to do with good photography so shouldn't mixed them up and I think you are. If you want to avoid complexity, save storage space, don't have quality issues with your jpegs and don't want the flexibilty of RAW then stick to jpeg because you...
I thought I'd share a few screen grabs of a program I use for post processing. These were test shots taken to try find the best position for my camera - there are horrible reflections so please ignore them. This is not about the photos but about the techniques available to correct distortion...
I hope I don't upset anyone by recommending these products (Chinese clones) but the price is amazing for what you are getting. You get £600 worth of equipment for £300.
I would spend as much as you can afford on a tripod. If you buy cheap you'll buy twice.
Questions you need to ask are...
It's amazing how many people use photographs that are not their own. If you put it on the internet it's going to be used if it's any good and probably without your permission.
I have a photo published in a book called Unwrecked England. The only photo I have ever sold for publication and yes...
Use a tripod if you can and pre-focused manually on where the bird will land. There may be some trial and error but if your camera does not move position you should find the perfect focus because the bird always lands in the same spot :)
ISO 400
Aperture as wide as the lens allows, so the...
Another aquarists dream location. This time were on the west coast of New Zealand 20 minutes drive North of Haast and our destination is the Dept of Conservation area called Ships Creek. Most of the West Coast of NZ is covered in podocarp forests mostly with an amazing tree call the Kahikatea...
I highly recommend a detour to a place I think few ever venture despite it being accessible (I took a hire car down the track).
It will appeal to anyone in this hobby as there were huge numbers of aquatic plants growing wild but I have no idea what they were as I was to busy trying to be...
