    ADA substrate and additives

Well I guess with everything its what you want to pay, personally I think its worth the money. Even when it runs out of steam the soil that you are left with is still an excellent medium for growing plants, just add EI and away you go for another few years. Just my opinion of course

Base Layer: Tropica Aquacare or ADA Powersand special?

The Tropica substrate does not contain any nutrients whereas the power sand does, it contains mainly KNO3 AFAIR, thats why people have success with it.

    magnetic substrate?

Yes noticed this as well, it seems very magnetic.

    manado in the UK

Thanks for the photo, thats helpful. So this stuff would probably scratch the glass if you were not careful. The grain size also seems quite small.

    manado in the UK

Aw yes the search function :D Pity, they would clean up if it did, although the label is highly misleading. Still good addition, might try it myself.

    manado in the UK

It says "nutrient medium" so maybe it is nutrient rich, but with what who knows. Great price if it is, for 25l.

    storing reasy used AQUA SOIL

It will definitely dry out, it might take a bit longer though with a large amount. I'm basing the 2 weeks drying period on drying 2x9l bags in a 100l tank, I have done it several times at this stage in the same tank, normally 2 weeks is about right for my tank.

    storing reasy used AQUA SOIL

IME it takes about two weeks for Aquasoil to dry out fully once a tank has been emptied of water, never experienced "smelly"

    New substrate-Tropica "nature soil"

Is it just a gravel though? It seems to be. So no nutrient content.

    New substrate-Tropica "nature soil"

Well it says in the spec," Fertilized substrate: Tropica AquaCare" so I assumed it was a fertilized substrate made by Tropica. Apparently not though, it is in development by by Oliver Knott himself, he intends to bring out his own product line in the near future according to Anti-Pjerrot over...

    New substrate-Tropica "nature soil"

Coming soon! Looks interesting, an ADA aquasoil clone I wonder. don't know about the brown but the black looks good, no doubt it will be expensive, on a par with Aquasoil for cost anyway. http://www.pbase.com/plantella/naturesoiltestlayout Edit: or is it a gravel?

ADA AS Amazonia = Yellow Water

Carbon clears it up in a day or two.

Which type of Aquasoil and Powersand?

Ed I found you will not get rid of the tannins until you add some activated carbon to the filter, I put up with tannins in one of my tanks for about 3 weeks even with lots of water changes the tannins were still very visable , and then I had enough, added the carbon and the tannins were gone in...

need advice on substrate for new tank

Tropica substrate only contains sphagnum moss and clay, it does not contain any nutrients. Im not sure how it works well for the long term except at initial startup because it contains no nutrient value, messy stuff as well unless well buried under a good layer of gravel, it basically has the...

    master soli

Another substrate worth watching out for is a substrate called 'Gex' its similar to ADA Aquasoil in nutrient content but a lot harder, it does not break down to easily, its a clay but it has been fired longer than aquasoil, its getting good reviews on forums in Asia.

Come on jimbooo bet you have it ordered now, keeping us in suspense, what you go for in the end, we need to know....................

need advice on substrate for new tank

Sorry i thought the question was mainly about aquasoil. ADA amazonia is dark brown in colour, a more natural earthly colour than a black substrate IMO. Well I suppose if a black colour is the only criteria Eco complete would fit the bill but you would need to at least double the amount of bags...

need advice on substrate for new tank

Hi James just moved this topic into the substrate section, my 'ahem' first piece of moderating ever lol. Anyway personally I would not go for a bow front tank, they never photograph properly, but thats just a personal thing. The Aquasoil yeah thats a hard one to give advice on for a tank that...
