2 Filters

Looks like google ads just sent me enough money to go ahead and grab another filter. I have the Eheim 2217 on the left hand side of a 125 gallon tank. Since I know the filter (and the check doesn't cover the Fluval FX5) I am thinking of grabbing another Eheim 2217 filter and placing it on the right hand side of the tank.

There is a mega fish store about 40 minutes away from me. It is nice because they only do fish and the place is huge. All the other places in town sell other pets and pet supplies and they are helpless when it comes to fish. I like to pick their brain when I am in their store in regards to plants, but they are always worthless.

I told the guy that I have a Eheim with 2 power heads and it was turning over my tank 7 times per hour. He said that was well more than enough. He said all I needed was the Eheim and not even the power heads. Sigh, I didn't want to hear that from him because you guys all have said 10x per hour, so basically my faith in the fish store has diminished (See what you guys have done to me!)

My new 400 gph powerhead died yesterday, it was only a week and a half old, so that sucks! I do not have the receipt but I do have the box it came in. I emailed the company (Hydor) to see if I had any options.

Regardless, I think another Eheim 2217 will help me, especially with the longer tank. The last time I cleaned my filter after 3 months of not cleaning it, it was a friggin mess! I did however, take out all of the Cabomba out of the tank. I have such big fish in the tank (had them prior to falling in love with plants) that the Cabomba gets knocked around and is always up against the power heads and made things messy. I am hoping that helps keep things a little cleaner. Right now I have a ton of swords and some misc other stuff that I have no clue what it is.

Thoughts on the filter?

Thanks!!

I think we need to give these fish shops a break really. They are fish shops not aquatic plant specialists and at the end of the day they can only say what they have been told / experienced themselves. A bit like a tennis player trying to teach you squash!!!

I would definately get 2 filters on there. Bad luck with the powerhead.

Well, they sell a good variety of plants and have several nice planted tanks in their store. The other fish stores do not, they just screw you on fish advise. :)

Thanks for the confirmation on the filter!

Second filter sounds like a good thing to do to me. I'd also clean them more often than every 3 months. I clean mine every 2 to 4 weeks.

Well, if I clean my filter that much I would imagine that the cycle would get broken too often. I clean it all with cycled tank water, but ya never know what can happen. Before I had the tank planted I just cleaned the filter every 5-6 months.

With an additional filter I would clean one of them every 4 weeks. That would let each filter run for 2 months before being cleaned and probably raise the possibility that the cycle will remain intact.

I have decided to go with the second filter, I think it will be mega nice. And my dad fixed the 400 gph power head when he was over last night.

you'll notice an improvement in water clarity too. May seem clear to you now but wait and se.

I see what you mean about the cycling. I used to find that with my old internal filter. I don't get that problem with my current canister filter however ruthlessly I clean it. Maybe it is because of my low bioload.

Like Andy says you are going to have some lovely crystal clear water :)

Yeah, I think my water is pretty darn clear now, I will be anxious to see if there is an improvement once I add the filter. :)

since ive had 2 filters rated at 1050L per hour on my 60L opti white (over the top?....i dont know,) the difference is absalutley amazing. water is so damn clear, and every single leaf in there is algae free even the slow growers.
had signs on my anubias but extra flow, lower lighting high co2 has eradicated every sign of the dreaded green stuff. amazing!

im looking at buyiny a eheim pro 3 2080 and maybe something a tad smaller to run along side for my new opti white setup. pricey, but well worth it.
