40l aquascape project.

Today I bought a superfish home 40 tank for £10. It's only missing the filter box and heater but I have the filter. I want to try do an aquascape that you would see in magazines/competitions. The plan is for a HOB filter with a small heater and then plan out the plants and the hardscape. I will have co2 but I'm not sure the lighting is adequate. I have plans for a twin t5 DIY light fitting if not.
Which of these two ideas look better or I'm open to other suggestions and possibly plant options.

The bottom one looks more naturel.

Both hardscape looks great! The bottom one is perfect if you like to create a natural scape. The top is great if you like to do a deep scape with path.

I like both, but think the top one will be hard since a lot of the plantspace is overshadowed by the thick wood. I'd go for 2
