A mix of gravel + sand in tank

Hi All,

I have always admired tanks with sand as opposed to gravel.

I have gravel in my tank and was thinking of adding some sand to it also. Would it work looks wise or look terrible?

Would anyone have any tips/suggestions?

It has been done before. It looks fine on an aesthetical point of view, but if you're the die-hard aquascaper then I wouldn't advise it.

In terms of tips, try to get quite a small grade gravel, and a similar sort of colour to the sand otherwise it'd just look really odd and artificial

it's high maintenance stuff, but sure looks great if done right.

here's my attempt, i still learnt a fair amount from this. dont have too much of a steepness otherwise the bigger stuff roles to the front eventually.

barriers are essential too

As already said, when done right it looks excellent. If you have shrimp or ground dwelling fish (corys, loaches) then try not to over do it with the finer gravel because they will roll them about and turn t into a mess.
