I very much agree. I often perceive layouts full of strikingly coloured plants rather artificial. A bit like a flower exhibition. Such collections are valuable as an assemblage of 'difficult' or 'rare' species, but their aesthetical merit is often scanty.
Much better results can be created by thoughtful combination of various shapes and shades of green, I think. It should deliver a feeling of tranquility.
