I know people use this in their ponds, not sure how successful it is as never used it myself.

It's advisable to do all the things to promote plant health in your tank instead of looking for ways to inhibit algae. Barley will not solve the root cause of your algae and it will not remove algae that is already in the tank. The data is inconclusive as regards it's efficacy.
