I have a few tanks ... but have not been able to get to them all over the last few months.

I stumbled onto the thread about BBA here https://www.ukaps.org/forum/threads/what-exactly-causes-bba-part-2-bacterial-imbalance.38375/

Since allot of it made sense and I had a BBA issue I decided to change 3 things in the affected tank.

1) add two small SAE's
2) increase fertz
3) Add a truck load of aeration 24x7

My BBA was extensive and the BN's did nothing to curb the growth.

and I doubted these guys would make much of a dent ... it seemed like an H2O2 reset bomb would be needed.

Tanks really was in a bad way - going downhill. 18 Nov 2018 added the aeration.

To say that I am more than pleased with the result would be an understatement.

So thanks to @AndyMcD for not only a great bit of writing and research, but being willing to share it with the world.

I still have some BBA - and I think that is good, but the battle seems to be won.

Hi Ferdie

Thank you very much for your very kind words.

There are many strong arguments and competing theories concerning BBA and I should say that my proposal has no real scientific proof. I do still believe in the theory.

However, if it has led you to an approach that you believe has worked for you, that is really great.

Recently, I’ve changed my aquascape, in an attempt to make it lower maintenance, mostly by reducing the light levels and focussing on plants that are happiest in that environment. I’ve thought again about all the great advice on UKAPS and put it into practice. It’s great to feel that you are more in control.

Your aquascape looks great. Congratulations on turning it around.

Thank you very much.

Glad to hear you are still in the hobby Andy, I do agree on the low maintenance desire. If you want to look at something that is slightly different and that requires a bit of re-learning then I can suggest an e(im)mersed setup.

As for the BBA - the thought process of bacteria, O2 vs CO2 and then B12 got me thinking of years back when I started dosing multi-vitamins to a tank as an experiment - yes it had B12 in it ( the cheap stuff) but I battled with that tank for a loooong time and ultimately did a restart on it because of all the algae issues - so I am happy to say it was by chance and that that also had no scientific proof - but big chunks of the hobby and commercial products lack that scientific proof when one looks at the entire system.

Hi Ferdie,

Your immersed set up looks fabulous!!!

It’s the researching and reading around the hobby that I’ve found as interesting as the doing. A good distraction from the stresses of work. I’ll be sure to read up about immersed set ups.

That’s very interesting about dosing your tank with vitamins.

You’re correct when you say that the major challenge will be scientific proof, if you try to look at the entire system.

I guess I’ve proposed one way the jigsaw could be put together to make a picture, but this jigsaw could go together in so many different ways!

My last buce flower for 2018 ... will be all done by next year.

You can see some BBA on the flower - but nothing to worry about.

Have a safe evening all.

All is doing well, BBA is all but gone. I can now look at changing the rest of the housekeeping to reduce the other types of algae as seen ...

Looks like the last of the BBA

A week into a more rich fertz mix - idea is to combat the GSA next.

New growth looks good - still on aeration and no CO2

Missing a SAE - think it took a jump, hot weather loads of evaporation - will do a small WC today.
