thanks for your reply i wasn't aware that any of the aspleniums are aquatic i only know them as a garden plant.but that's probably showing my ignorance! i bought it from a pet shop near to me,the guy in the shop said he'd had it sat there for about six months! i paid £2.00 for it. Fingers crossed i can keep it alive as i really like the look of it.

The asplenium if it is, (yours kinda looks simular in leave shape, but i still can be very wrong) have a lot of sp. actualy aren't truly aquatic. The one i'm refering "Asplenium cf. Normale", does very good submersed, but in nature they grow terrestrial, most likely also on ereas which regularly flood. Many so called aquarium aquatics aren't in their natural habitat. :)

Also known as Crepidomanes auriculatum.. :)

my plant does look similar to the picture you have above, i haven't planted it yet but plan to attach it to some wood in my small 35 litre low tech tank.

Hi all,
Also known as Crepidomanes auriculatum..
I think it is probably Hymenasplenium obscurum (syn. Asplenium cf. normale) as well.
Article in DATZ 06-2012: Now the supposed "Crepidomanes auriculatum" from Taiwan is IDed again, and apparently finally: Hymenasplenium obscurum.
The ID was made by Prof. Dr. R. Viane (Ghent, Belgium). He got full-grown emersed plants with sori from Christel Kasselmann, she got them from Stefan Hummel, company Dennerle. The preliminary ID as Asplenium cf. normale was made with submersed plants.
You can an image search for "Crepidomanes auriculatum" to get more images.

cheers Darrel

Thanks for your reply Darrel, i'v had a quick look on the net and from the images i'v seen it does appear to be H.obscurum. my next question would be any tips on cultivation ?

Hi all,
my next question would be any tips on cultivation ?
I had it for a while, but I'm not sure I have any more.

It was a gift from Gerard ("Frothhelmet") or Matt ("a1Matt"), possibly Matt.

It produced loads of new plantlets on the leaves, but it never looked very healthy.

I think Gerard still grows it? <"or Paulo"> ("LondonDragon")?

cheers Darrel

I've had "Crepidomane" in for testing, some time ago........exactly same experience as Darrell; suviving for a while, producing plantlets, never looking seriously healthy.........and finally giving up.
This was the result of several plants, in different conditions unfortunately.
Conclusion: not of commercial intetest, sinve pnly fit for a vety few specialist tank-holders (+ maybe more paludarium-holders ;) )

thank you Darrel and Mick.dk for your reply as i'v said the guy in the shop i bought it from said he had had it for about six months .It does look healthy at present although there is no sign of recent growth.i must say i find it really odd that such a plant was found in a very unassuming pet shop with only a few tanks .Guess it just proves you never know what might turn up .Its a shame it doesn't take to submersed culture as imo its a lovely little fern.

Has non to do with ignorance, if it does it's not ours but the lfs manager.. Can happe to anyone and probably happend to a lot of us too. Happend to me last week.. So a nice plant n the lfs, thought excactly what i'm looking for.. Usualy i look at home what i want and go out shopping to find it.. This one was coinsidental because i had a grassy plant on my mind and saw Mondo Grass in a tank in the lfs, never noticed it before.. Came home with it and it seems to be a terrestrial plant..:lol:
Stands at the window now and doing great..

A shame that you even can not trust the LFS anymore, they are not knowing what they are doing but picking money out of our pockets. :yuck:

Hi marcel there does seem to be a number of plants being sold as suitable for submersed culture when in fact they are not. A few species that most spring to mind are dracaena sp. Syngonium podophylum ,spathiphyllum wallisii, cordyline sp .Red edge. All are frequently for sale yet totally unsuitable for growing submersed.Even some of the well known potted plant suppliers are selling these . obviously people see these brightly coloured plants and assume that they will grow in there tanks , only to be disappointed a few weeks down the line when they have turned to mush. On reflection regarding my own little fern and after reading Mick Dk 's post i have decided to move it to a tall glass cylinder vase and grow it more as a paludarium plant along with some mosses ect. Live and learn!

Hi Alex, i know, all sp. you name are grown by Dennerle and always to find submersed in lfs dennerele dealers.. Dennerle doesn't make a secret of it, in it's dtabase these plants are labled as Terrarium plants only.. But the little lable in the plants pot doesn't.. Even worse the lables back side says Plant for new nano cube and fit for aquascaping.
They are both taking us for a ride the LFS and Dennerle and probably other nurseries as well.. I just call it bad service.. Maybe i should send Dennerle an e-mail with a complained about their suspiciously distracting services and selling strategy.. :)

Dennerle also did grow that asplenium for a while i was to late and can't find it anymore, would love to try it in a WK or on a HOB filter above an open to tank.

Now Dennerle has the Crepidomanes cf. malabaricum fern in the collection, soon available.. This also again isn't realy truly edintified as what it realy is. :) But most likely not a true long term aquatic..

Hi I bought it from a shop near to me in Leeds, its only a small place with a few tanks and usually even fewer plants for sale! thought it was random finding it in such a place

Can I ask where you bought it? :♧

As said Dennerle did grow for some time, you still might be able to find leftovers in some LFS supplied by Dennerle.
Same as the Crypt lutea/walkerii hobbit, is grown by Dennerle this year, was looking for an internet supplier but most where out of stock already.
Walked by a dennerle delaer by chance last week and it still had 5 specimen for sale, 2 for the price of 1 because it wasn't as popular and didn't sell at this lfs. :woot:
