cycling and substrate

Hello,

I will be introducing a lot of plants in my new tank which will have an aquatic compost plus sand substrate on two levels.

I was hoping the necessary ammonia would come from the compost
but then I am worried that with compacted sand the amminia will not be released into the tank hence no cycling.

Am I right to worry about this?
