During a prolongued period of inactivity (otherwise known as skiving) I decided to read some rules on aquascaping competitions and I was very entrigued by the rules on sharing photos and updates of an entry that will be entering a competition.

What are your feelings on not being able to show photos when you intend to submit an entry into an aquascape competition?

Personally, I think its absolute rubbish. We do this for the love of seeing something breathtaking in our house, something to keep us occupied and more importantly, to share joy to those who view her (yes... tanks are women :))

If i should take an example of another passion in my life: Football....

If people did not share their knowledge for others to see, how would the talented new youngsters come through and become the legends of yesteryear?

I undersatand the need for anti-cheating methods but would you say that not sharing a tanks progress is absolutly neccessary?

I for one would not concider entering a competition unless i had public aproval that it is worthy!

I hope this is taken in the was it was intended and not as a rant.

Look forward to your opinions!

Lee

I think its silly not being able to show pictures for the competitions. Most of the entries look identical to each other (with a few exceptions that never win) so what are they going to copy?

A tank is not a woman. Must be a man because it can take a lot of stress!! and the abuse these tanks get would set a woman off into a sulk.

not to mention the scratches their skin can get. Ouch a woman would be in A&E in tears.

(I fully expect a full spanking for these comments. lol. pm me for the address)

I hadn't heard that at all, sounds a bit rubbish! Can you show pics after the decision process?

Andy - sigh, can tell you aren't loving your wife atm :p

Lee, please could you link to those rules - I looked on the AGA website but could not find.

Also I noticed George is not able to post final shots of his 80cm because he plans to enter them into a competition. However, he has been able to post a dozen blog entries re. its development on PFK website so the rules can't be that strict :?:

I'll be damned if I can find it at the moment. I'll check my hisroty when I get back to work on monday.

Andy... surely it has to be a woman? They are so bloomin tempramental!

not temperamental, challenging is the word. competitive as it is trying to beat us.

Definately a man.

If it were a woman it would give up from having to use too much energy competing and we would all be happy with algae free, disease free tanks.

I don't like the way all these male/female arguments are going, I fear someone is going to end up alienated, I understand its all in jest but I don't think our forum is the right place. :bored:

Totally correct. I don't want to hurt the tank's feelings (although being male it has thick skin. lol)

Ha, ha

I think only ADA don't like entrants to show their final entries before contest.

I guess because they produce a book with all the final entry photos.

I respect their rules, personally.

I still dont see what their point is though. Its almost like saying no one can see the tank, in the flesh as well as digitally.

Hi Lee

I've had another thought. Maybe it's to prevent 'theft' and other dodgy practices.

The Grand Prize for winning the ADA is 1,000,000 yen. That's over 5 grand at the current exchange rate.

If you had a top 'scape then making it public has many potential implications.

In response to your thread title...

Aquascaping, like many other hobbies and art forms, is becoming more commercialised. This can be a good thing for the hobby, I feel. Personally I like to see aquascaping becoming more popular, and the commercial aspect has the potential to help the hobby.

Take my LFS for instance. Five years ago, CO2 refills, quality plants, planted display tanks etc. etc. where non-existant. Now they have a respectable planted tank product line, decent display tank with pressurized CO2 etc. and now stock Tropica plants with a dedicated decent stock tank with high light, CO2...

Without some commercial influence the hobby would likely die out.
