Am I correct in thinking you don't need one of these if you only dose liquid carbon?

Correct 
It indicates the level of dissolved CO2 in the water by allowing it to gas off into the air chamber, and then mix with the indicator solution causing a reaction. Liquid carbon is carbon in a different form. Sadly I'm not overly scientific, so I wan't even attempt to go into detail
