Filters for small tank?

OK, so the Aqua Flo 1 that came with the Aqua 40 tank (30 x 30 x 30cm) rumbles like a diesel engine - it's very bad.

I have used an Eheim Aqua Ball in this tank in the past but it's really too big.

Anyone any suggestions for compact internal filters?

How about an external? The tetratec ex600 or ex700 would do nicely I've got the ex600 running on my 24x8x8" nano

Maybe try a HOB filter ? Ive used one before and it seemed to do the trick in 30L tank and was super quiet!

An external filter would have been nice but this tank is sitting on my office desk and I don't want a filter knocking about underneath. HOB is not really possible due to the fitted lid on the tank.

I was thinking about the Eheim 2006 or possibly the Fluval U1. Eheim always seem to be good.
