Fire extinguisher CO2

looking at this german set up as well: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CO2-Complete-Syst ... dZViewItem

Just to be clear- is there a standard fitting for co2 tanks and regulators and so can you fit a fire extinguisher bottle to this set up?

Does anyone know if you can get this bottle refilled in the UK (pref nr. Manchester) and if so for about how much? I assume if there is a standard fitting then this shouldn't be a problem.

Does anyone know if this malaysian set up is better or much the same:

I believe there are different types of thread fittings, however I've yet to find a reg/cylinder combo that doesn't fit. I think the different threads are probably either on rare or specialist equipment.

That kit you linked to, I have two of the regs and both fits FE's :) I doubt you'll be able to get the bottle refilled unfortunately though.

That Malaysian kit is good and gives you the option of getting whatever cylinder and diffuser you like (the German kit diffuser is bulky IMHO), so you will probably save some money as you are not paying for a cylinder you would use once its empty.

The german kit goes on about the fact that it's solenoid doesn't buzz. do you know if this is a problem with other solenoids or the malaysian one particularly?
I admit I have little knowledge of co2 cylinders, but surely if the attachment is the same on the german tank as a fire extinguisher then filling it up can't be a problem- don't you put the co2 in where it comes out?

I haven't heard of any problems with either solenoids re buzzing or the temp, so it shouldn't be an issue with either.

The issue with refilling the cylinder is that cylinders need to be pressure tested every 10years I believe and due to the extreme pressures experienced places in the UK are reluctant to refill cylinders that are either unbranded or that they dont know where they came from. Which you can understand, you wouldn't want to refill a cylinder and have it explode. So every few places will refill any old cylinder. There are a few but they tend to be rare. I suggest you check your local yellow pages for welding shops and ask them, they can only say no. Same goes for FE's, try your local fire shops, some might be willing to sell you an FE and refill it. Avoid Boc as they are stupidly expensive.

Cheers for the clarification, couldn't quite figure it out from what had been written. I might ask luna pet if they have some quality standard mark. being german/ EU I'd be surprised if they didn't.

I know that this might be like asking how long is a piece of string, but how long do you think 500g of co2 would last for a 180L planted tank in soft water area. Just want to get a ball park figure of how often I would need to get refills, 6-12 months?

How long will 500g of co2 last. That depends on the diffusion method used and how much you add and if you run 24/7 or not. On my 180L tank using a rhinox diffuser at 30ppm it was lasting 3-4 weeks, but with a external reactor i get nearly twice as long 6-8 weeks. I only run co2 when the lights are on, actually thats on 2hrs before and off 3hrs before lights out.

that seems pretty short- is your tank v heavily planted/ high light?

Didn't realise it went that quickly. Was looking at the german 500g set up, but may consider upgrade to 2kg

You probably won't be able to get the German co2 tank refilled, so you may as well save your money and use 2kg or 5kg Co2 fire extinguishers once the 500g runs out, or better still keep the 500g to use in an emergency. :D

Thinking whether to just get the malay system http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CO2-Regulator-Ele ... m153.l1262
and buy a 2kg fire extinguisher to stick it on to. Probably come out a bit cheaper that german system. One of the main things attracting me to the german system was its claim that the solenoid doesn't hum, but from what I have heard, doesn't seem to be too much of a problem.

Going to hong kong in a couple of months so might try to pick up a kit out there. Asking a chap on another forum for some good shop recommendations. Hopefully save a few bob.

Presuming that the setup includes the CO2 cylinder as well, what would the issues be in bringing a pressurised container back on a commercial flight?

Not going to fly with a 2kg fire extinguisher in my backpack! Can just imagine trying to get thru security with that- "yes officer, I'm just a paranoid flyer and want to help if there's a fire on board." Let alone in Heathrow- asian bloke, big cylinder, airport- not a good mix.

No- just reg, solenoid, diffuser, tubing, other cheap titbits I really don't need. Chatting to a guy from Hong Kong and he said there's a street there with 30 aquarium shops. Stuff is cheaper than on eBay as there is no tax (plus no postage) so hopefully pick up reg and solenoid sub 35 quid.

You can always post the cylinder back to yourself, I have done that aboard when something was too big to bring back on luggage.
