I purchased an Eheim Ecco Pro 300 yesterday and set it running on my tank. Its the first time I have had an external filter so am a little confused. the pipe connecting the canister to the outlet and inlet, how taught should this be?

I set it up so I can drap the canister out of the cabinet and then detach the hoses, but it leaves a bit of slack when there back in, will it make any difference?

Some slack is good - when you pull the filter out to clean it you have enough length on the pipework so things don't snag or pull even tighter. I have a good few loops in my tubing for this reason alone, alongside the fact that loops prevent kinks too :)
