As you can see i am living in Athens Greece.

I've done a tour around all the fish shops i can find in Athens and found 1 which stands clear as the best.

They have a great stock of fish, but are a bit lacking in variety with plants.

The other shops i've visited either had even less variety or their plants were more dead than alive.

I realise that different plants will survive better than others, but generally what sort of time frame are we talking for them still to stand a chance?

Packages from the UK to Greece usually take 1 week for a time frame.

Cheers

Why do packages take a week? I've had stuff come from Hawaii in 4 days and Singapore in 3! Is it the local post that's so slow?

Anyway I would have thought you'd be fine ordering from any of the mail order sellers. They know how to pack stuff to make it.

Greek post office :(

Theres no rhyme nor reason, letters take a week as does heavy parts for me car.

The sad thing is i've even tried payong for faster services it's still exactly the same.
The only exception i've found is DHL, but they're bloody expensive.

I've got most of my background plants sorted, but i'm looking for foreground plants and/or hairgrass or some sort of lawn type plant.

Are the smaller type going to as hardy travellers please?

Hi Mark,
Anything from the Echinodorus family seems impervious to damage from long transport times. A week should be no problem. Ludwigias, Hygrophilas, Ferns and some mosses are also fairly robust. Carpet plants on the other hand are hit and miss. I've had these types shipped to UK from Malaysia which have been in transit for a week or more and have had fairly good luck. As long as they are packaged well and they don't dry out you have a good chance of reviving them as long as you get them in the tank without delay and as long as you feed them properly with goodly amounts of CO2.

Off the top of my head, It seems like there is a correlation between the robustness of a plant in the tank and it's ability to survive transit. In other words, plants that are known to be hardy growers are also better able to withstand the rigors of transit.

Extreme temperatures are problematic though, so I may think twice about trying it in August, lest they arrive as vegetable soup
:D

Cheers,

Fantastic news then thanks guys :)

You know what question comes next though ;)

What online plant shops do you guys recommend?

Doesn't specifically have to be in the UK but from what you guys advise they do need to be well packaged.

It's not just plants that wilt in summer it's also fair skinned Englishmen :(

Well I got some great plants recently from Aquaspot world, but postage works out relaitvely expensive unless you're ordering a lot of plants.

You might be best contacting Tropica and seeing if there is a stockist of their plants nearer you, or at least in Continental Europe that would mail stuff to you. There must be Mail-order stockists in countries near to you that would ship to you?

Hi,
Theoretically, if we're in the Euro zone most any online shop ought to ship to you.

The Asian Ebayers such as those mentioned by Ed are good. Their main page is here: http://www.aquaspotworld.com/index.php? ... odule=main

Greenline is popular in the UK and their plants are really well packaged - http://www.aquaticplants.eu.com/

I often use Birstall Garden centre for Tropica plants - http://www.birstall.co.uk/ranges/99984-1.html It might be better to call them and confirm that they will ship. Talk to Vera the "aquatic plant lady" :D

It looks like Aqua Essentials now stock Tropica plants now as well http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.p ... 75bf0b479c

There is also The Green Machine http://www.thegreenmachineaquatics.com/ ... tic+Plants

You ought to be able to organize something between the choices listed above. 8)

Cheers,
