I've only tried low tech set-ups so i can't speak from experience to well here but the most troublefree solution i would suggest is have a well informed neighbour/family member carry out your usual routine. Being advisable to have the routine written down near the tank simply too
Whenever i go away, being a low-techi and all, i just do a slightly larger than normal water change the day before i go (or that morning if possible) and leave my lighting/CO2 on a timer. I dose the fert column a little heavier than usual after the water change, and touch wood it hasnt given me any issue to date. Ofcourse in a higher light/CO2 tank those actions might have worse consequences.
