    Hi all!

I have replaced the sponges to JBL SintoMec in my rio 180 filter. My question is can I get rid of the nitrate and/or the carbon sponges? I'm not sure if the rings will completely remove all nitrates and chemicals. Advice please!

Yes, plants use the nutrients that carbon takes in and they also use nitrate, you will starve your plants. Most people use sponges, bio balls, sometimes peat.

So is the SintoMec itself perfectly fine?

The reason being that if you changed it all at once you will have lost your bacteria in the filter, do it over a couple of months 1 at a time. Hope this helps.
