It could be from the tissue culturing process maybe? I don't know if AquaFleur do the whole tissue culturing process like Tropica do (I have no idea how AF grow their plants) Unusual to say the least :)

AquaFleur do a tissue culturing process the same as Tropica.

Hi all,
Gel fertilisers are widely used (particularly in the Far East), but my suspicion would be that it is a water retentive "hydrogel" added as a bit of insurance against unexpected mishaps in the emersed growing process. The gels are long chain polymers which you store as dry "crystals", but are super-absorbent when wetted. You can buy them for use in hanging baskets etc. http://weirdsciencekids.com/watergel.html

Tropica doesn't mention that there HC are "tissue cultured" <http://www.tropica.com/article.asp?type=aquaristic&id=621>, but does say they are grown emersed. Because they root very easily from cuttings my suspicion would be that they would be propagated that way, and the emersed growing would remove the problem of contamination with filamentous algae etc.

cheers Darrel
