Color wise the plants don''t care, just follow your taste/what looks good for you.
Suspended light over an open top is good, just: watch out for lightspil, can be huge; watch out for jumpers; large open tanks can evaporate a decent amount of humidity

I have one flood light as part of the mixture. It actually does pretty well and even got my hydrophila to grow emersed which did not happen with any of my aquarium lights previously. Only issue is the angle of mine is 120 degrees, so there's spill but it depends on the length and depth of the tank as well, if for underwater use. I actually "use" the spill of light for other tanks with emersed plants. You can see the plants on the nearby pond turning towards the flood light that lights two tubs set up as tanks.
