My New AquaScaper 600

1681489703132.png

So after having a look online and multiple reviews, I have found that the Chihiros RGB Vivid Mini LED light is much better than my twinstar and only costs around £100 more. Do I go for the light? I have found that with my plants that there isn't enough spread towards the back of the aquarium. What should I do? I may sell the other and buy this light. What are everyone's thoughts? It is also app controlled so it would be a lot better to control.

I'm getting good results with an Ecotec Radion G4Pro on a tank very similar to this setup and I also have another for my Aquascaper600 which needs setting up in the next few weeks. I'll be ceiling mounting it with cable for a cleaner look. Does this light have a PAR spread pattern available for a given height? My Ecotec is 95W and I can customise the colour temp or each LED if required. It runs at only 45W and even that is very high a tank 24 inch deep and has a good 2ft spread of PAR at 18 inches. The Aquascaper600 would probably require only 35-40W max I'd imagine as it's more shallow but equally as long and wide.

These are the PAR values rated to the twinstar at the height of the brackets. The light is 40w, but because the tank is 50cm in width, i feel as though it’s not getting towards the more light demanding stems at the back. I think i’d prefer a more powerful light i could control as well.

So i have encountered a problem with bba and staghorn algae. I’ve never encountered these before so please can i have some advice on how to remove. Here are the details.

All water paremeters are fine as i have checked this evening

lights running from 3pm-11pm

co2 running from 1pm-10pm

consistent 1ph drop and drop checker is lime green

dosing 5ml tropica nutrition daily

currently on water changes every 2 days

diatoms have set in but they will go.

How do i get rid of this from the plants and what do i treat it with? do i remove some and add a different species? the algae is on mostly the slow growers and hardscape.

How is flow? In my Osaka tank flow seemed fine via a Biomaster but I added a wave maker and the MC lay flat after a couple of days and growth went crazy. Nothing else had changed. BBA can come about from poor maintenance or poor Co2 distribution and since your set up is new, I doubt it's the former.

I'd increase WC frequency and spot dose with liquid carbon to help things along. Check if suitable with your livestock. I'd also make sure flow is absolutely bang on.

How are you measuring the pH drop? DC aren't reliable for anything other than there being some Co2 in the water column at some stage.

The flow is quite strong, but it think i’m not getting enough on the epiphytes so that may also be one of the issues, i’m going to add a small wavemaker to try and see if that helps. I’ve bought some liquid co2 this morning to spot dose, and i’m going to up my water changes.

I’m also measuring my co2 by checking to see if i get a consistent drop in 1 ph when co2 is on. So i measure the co2 when the water is degassed, and then when it has had the co2 running until the lights go on. This drop has been consistent and i’ve been reaching 25-30ppm.

Check out my journal below: ADA 60F : The valley iwagumi

I faced tremendous amounts of BBA and staghorn in this tank and identified that the key issue was change in temperature/ammonia spikes. In order to treat it, the best way is to either remove the plants on their mounts or drain the tank until the plants are exposed and spray with H2O2. I used the typical 3% solution available in the pharmacy. Let it sit for a bit and watch the bubbles commence. Soon enough, the algae will die and if you have sufficient amano shrimp/nerite snails, they will ingest it. That worked the best for me. With staghorn, you might have to just manually also remove as much as possible.

So here is an updated photo of the scape, i had to remove the bucephalandra kedegang (even though it was a lovely plant🥲) because i couldn’t save it with the amount of algae that was on it. I have replaced it with anubias nana large, which is doing a lot better. I went with the ONF Flat One+ in the end as my LFS had a sale and was offereing the light for £299 instead of £429. With the stronger light, the ludwigia palustris super red is growing alot, and so is the rotala h’ra.

And my lfs has asked me to help them scape a display tank that will go on youtube! So, if and when i do this tank, i will add a separate forum with the links so everyone can see.

I’m also getting the algae under control at the moment so i’m feeling alot better about that as well

It'll be interesting to see what develops over the coming weeks. I see you added a wave maker and changed your light too. I'd be interested in knowing if the intensity is now higher with the new light. 👍🏼

Hi everyone, i’ve been away for the weekend and come back to some of my monte carlo turning white, what is the cause and how do i rectify it?

So in the recent weeks i’ve been battling bba and staghorn. I’ve realised that with a high tech system i was only dosing 5ml of specialised nutrition and i needed to be dosing 10ml instead. With a small fish load i’ve also realised that i needed to add some more nitrogen into the tank, which was introduced with the added 5ml dose of fertiliser. I’ve increased my co2 levels, which has stopped the bba growth, and the added nitrogen has stopped the staghorn growth.

I’ve got a d-d p1 doser on the way, which will hopefully make my life much more easier, so i also don’t forget to dose the tank when i’m working. I’ve also ordered a co2 art inline diffuser, as i think it will be much better to distribute the co2 into the water. I’ve got more plants on the way to replace the ones i’ve lost through alage, and i will be adding blyxa japonica in the background to create a bushy look on the right hand side.

I’ll update the forum when i’ve got my delivery this weekend.
