I am thinking of starting up my 12l Nano cube (250mm x 250mm x 250mm) as a shrimp tank again soon, but also looking at a low tech planted. Does anyone have any advice on what substrate will bring out the best colours in small shrimp and do a good job for the plants?

Water PH is around 7.9-8.0

substrate which lowers the ph is the best voor nice looking shrimps in my experiences

ADA aquasoil or EBI GOLD SOIL. Both of these can reduce pH significantly and are really good for plants.

Both look good. I will probably take some material from the filter on the main tank to kick start cycling, does anyone know roughly how much ammonia they release and for how long?

I am assuming you don't need anything underneath them?

Definitely no need for capping. BTW ADA lacks phosphates and Potassium. So you might wanna add them if you ever start dosing.
