I'm hopeless with working out lighting so was wondering if you guys could help.

I found this desk lamp today and almost snapped it up but thought I would try and find a suitable bulb first;

My tank will be a low-tech 17litre nano and was wondering if one of these 11watt bulbs would be sufficient?

its a fluorescent bulb so not a useless halogen, could this work?

Cheers,
Neil

I reckon that should fine for a 17 litre low tech. Often the energy saver bulbs are a bit too warm in colour, but that one looks like it's 6500K so should look ok.

James

Thanks for posting this :)

I went and grabbed my old desk lamp and checked the colour temp of the energy saving bulbs (2500k) so went and bought a 6200k bulb from my LFS!

I'm now using it for extra lighting on my 80lt tank along with my new CO2 so should see my plant growth increase nicely!

Glad I saw this thread as I never even knew about this type of bulbs before!

I'm think about moving that lamp away from the glass a touch, I had a set up a lot like this when I was first starting and the heat shattered the pane nearest to the bulb.

Also, I don't think there'll be much problem in growing plants using most of the day light flouro's as a lot of American nano users have similar set ups. Often extremely crude looking but they grow plants well!
