Hi
Can anyone help, I have moved my tank because I had algae problems from a sky light in our extension.
I have cleaned all the tank glass, interior hardware such as heater thermometer etc. with bleach (light solution and thoroughly cleaned off)
I have all new substrate, gravel wood rocks.
A new FluvalSmart 107 external (60 litre tank)
All going well for a couple of weeks, now I have a brown/orange looking light hair/ cotton wool looking algae
Any solutions apart from chemicals?
Thank you
Karl

Hi, Karlo
It is normal if your aquarium does not have enough plants.
First increase a time of lighting and less feeding. Principle 1.
Change the water more often, twice a week. Principle 2.
Plant as many fast-growing plants as possible. Principle 3.

Could you upload a picture?

Hi @KarloNo1

As others have requested, a photograph of the algae is essential in order to accurately identify it. Simply use your mobile phone camera and try to avoid any reflections from the tank glass panels. Assuming that we can accurately identify the algae, we should then be able to advise how best to proceed.

I’m doing a water change daily at the moment and suck out as much of the algae as possible, I am still waiting for the CO2 to build to a full level, only added some tank safe at start. I have just now added some tank clear, which is supposed to take out harmful bacteria.
There are no fish or invertebrates present, 60 litre tank, just coming up to 3 weeks straight nice set up

Inject liquid CO2 to algae. Or peroxidе, this method is cheaper.

Hi all,
They look to be <"filamentous diatoms"> (Fragilaria / Synedra). Diatoms are really common in new set-ups and should decline over time as the plants grow in.

People will try and sell you "silicate removal resins", but <"they don' t really work"> and diatom blooms will decline over time naturally.

Cheers Darrel
