Hello

I am new to the Aquarium world and just getting started, I have a small 35 litre tank and just going through the cycling process, if anyone can give advice would be great, I live in Kent area which is very hard water area so been looking at forums looks like I need to get RO Water, if anyone can recommend where I can get some from locally?

Also I have an ornament that will be among the plants that i want to use in tank which is made of hydrostone, ( like cast plaster) it was painted but this is starting to peel so need recommendations on what I can use to make this waterproof ? either paint or sealant that is aquatic friendly?

Many thanks

Glenn

I’d suggest that you start with just using your tap water, it’s a lot less confusing and only switch to RO water if you really need to in future (I’ve just made the switch from hard tap water to RO after a year and a half of fish keeping, mainly so I can keep caridina shrimp who need soft water). Most fish that are sold these days are able to live in hardwater so it shouldn’t limit you massively (unless it’s super high pH and TDS). Do you know the pH of it?

Hi all,
Welcome to UKAPS

We don't recommend cycling with ammonia, but "plant and wait", have a look at <"Super.........."> and linked threads for some more detail.

Is <"collecting rain-water a possibility for you?"> It offers some of the advantages of RO without the cost or environmental foot-print. A lot of <"serious aquarists"> actually use rain water, including <"Tim Addis">.

cheers Darrel

Unless you want to do something really specialist, the water needs not be an issue. Mixing up etc brings its own complications, scope for swings in parameters etc.

Hello to All and big thanks for all the advice, I wish I had seen some of these posts a few days ago as had gone down the wrong route but luckily I had planted quite a few plants in tank so hopefully this will remedy it and no have not added Ammonia to tank and will do the Plant & wait route
