Hi All,

I bought a Fluval Flex 57 litre back in November and since then I have been considering what type of set up I would like to go for, plant make up and equipment. Initially I had planned no Co2 but decided to take the plunge and invested in Co2 Art regulator and all the associated Co2 art equipment. I have purchased an Allponds skimmer as advised by @Wookii and I will be dosing Tropica specialised nutrient.

My goal is to create a simple nature aquarium with Min Landscape rock and wood, manage a small system, deal with any issues and learn.

Here is the list of plants and quantities (pots from Tropica) I am planning on for the scape. I would very much appreciate if anyone can see any obvious issues with the plant selection before I place an order.

Flora

Background
Limnophila Hippuridoides x3
Hydrophila Siamensis 53B x2

Midground
Bucephalandra sp. Red x3
Anubias Petit or Nana x 3
Cryptocoryne Wendtii Tropica x1 XL pot
Cryptocoryn Petchii x2
Java Fern Narrow leaf x1

Foreground
Eleocharis acicularis mini carpet x3
Helantium Tenellum green carpet x 1

Fauna
1 Angry boy (blue Betta)
Shrimp
Perhaps a couple of Otto's.

Excellent thanks my man. I cant get Co2 due to the restrictions in travel here in Ireland so it may be another few weeks/months before I set her up. Any opinion on starting the tank without Co2?

Can you not get a fire extinguisher from some where out of date ones work just fine and are cheaper

I really do not see any point in using the Cryptocoryne 'Tropica' as an XL. Just go for a standard pot, like the Cryptocoryne 'petchii'.
Cryptocorynes usually loose most of their leaves, when planted in a new aquarium (=melt), so you would be best off removing most of the leaves anyway, before planting. This will enduce the growth of new emerse leaves, adapted to life in your specific aquarium.
Remember to separate the single plants in the pot, as best you can, as you remove the rock-wool. This way you get the most out of each plant in the pot, when you plant them a few cm. apart from eachother.

Purchase some Water Wisteria or Water Sprite to help cycle your aquarium!
Leave on the surface.
I strip a lot of the leaves off of the Water Wisteria "these are usually emersed stems" just leaving 3 or 4 fronds...this encourages root growth on the stem...…filtering the aquarium!

I have been keeping an eye on advert sites but nothing of note. I’m happy to wait until it’s safe to travel.

Do a DSM (Dry Start Method) and get 400ppm CO2 for free ;)

a very good idea but not this time round!

thank you. I have adjusted my list. I have a question, can both Crypt species I mentioned be pruned before inserting into tank?

Great advise. Added to my list, I don’t plant in substrate and leave floating as a nutrient hoover.

Revised list. I have sent emails to various outlets that stock Tropica plants in Ireland to see if they will Quote me and include my order in their next delivery.

I hope that it’s enough plant mass to start. If too much I will grow exposed to air in a small tank and put on the sale forum.

Limnophila Hippuridoides x3 (047C)
Hydrophila Siamensis 53B x2 (053B)
Hydrophilia diffformis x1 ( 051 BDT)

Bucephalandra sp. Red x3 (139A)
Anubias Petit x 3 (101H)
Cryptocoryne Wendtii Tropica x2 (109E)
Cryptocoryn Petchii x2 (108A)

Java Fern Narrow leaf x1 (008A)

Eleocharis acicularis mini carpet x3 (132 BTC)
Helantium Tenellum green carpet x 1 (067ATC)

Excellent thank you all. I have ordered my plants and have organised a Co2 source. This will be my first serious planted tank and I will open up a journal to document.

There’s something about an empty Aquarium ready to go eh

Hi
Any fast growing stem would do!
Ceratopteris thalictroides
Hygrophila polysperma
Limnophila sessiliflora

Hygrophila 'Siamensis 53B' would be okay....but the above would be my choice!
