I’ve been given a large external filter which has sat in my shed for a week . It’s full of old bio media . Can I just rinse this and re-use or do I dump it and start again ?

A watered down bleach soak works too, regular stuff not the splash free. Leave it for a few hours or even a whole day. Then dump the solution, refill with fresh water and add a dechlorinator, I would do 3x the recommended amount for the volume of water and and wait a day. Then dump and let the media dry outside completely.

I’d only do this if your really concerned about any bad bacteria, if you’ve had fish loss in the past or recently.

I suppose boiling it in a pan would work but might be a bit smelly! Could be painful as well if the other half catches you ...
