I have a couple of small books on aquarium plants but neither goes into much detail. Is there a good reference book out there that provides good illustrations and comprehensive information about individual plants and their needs? :)

I have heard that is book is good http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Encyclopedia-of-A ... 3357452300.

I have one and well pleased with it - have a look on ABE books they were the cheapest when I bought mine.
regards
Paul.

Takashi Amano plant book?
http://www.tropica.com/article.asp?type ... tic&id=562
i was suprised that Tropica had this on the top of their list. So this should not be bad really.

Seen this book even this is old still great.
This is published way back before the ADA era.

Hi all,
I'd agree with
Christel Kasselman's is the best for individual plant species.
and
The Tropica catalogue is actually very good.
I'd probably wait for the update to Kasselman, but any book is going to struggle to keep up to date with the range of new plants (not all of them scientifically described) coming into the hobby.

The other option is that many common aquarium plants, particularly those that thrive with high nutrients are "invasive aliens", so a book like "Macrophytes in Aquatic Ecosystems - from Biology to Management" http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search?index=books&linkCode=qs&keywords=1402053894 or a website "The Univ. of Florida/IFAS Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants" http://plants.ifas.ufl.edu/ is well worth a look.

cheers Darrel

Thanks everybody for your recommendations.

I will probably go with the Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants by Peter Hiscock to get me up and running then when Christel Kasselman's updated book is available have a look at that.

I have the said book and personally don't rate it. The methods are out of date (nutrients cause algae, heater cables, siestas etc.) and the plant glossary is very limited.

In my opinion you'd be better off considering the Tropica catalogue and saving the cash towards Christel's forthcoming release.

I have had a look on the Tropica website but cannot find a link to buy the plant booklet you mentioned is it available via the site or is there another supplier? :?

George is refering to the actual Tropica Catologue

http://www.e-pages.dk/tropica/4/

its a bit limited as it only what they produce / sell - does not give details of all tropical plants, but it will help you in your choice of plants

Paul
