'refreshing' lillies?

ive heard that lillies start to die off after a year and need storing in peat to regenerate it? how true is this and is it completely neccisary?
 
You can avoid this so called "dormant period" simply by lowering the temperature of the tank. Tom Barr advocated this on plantedtank.
