Regulator washer between reg and thread convertor

Hi all. I stupidly took off my thread adapter today and the washer in the reg is ruined.

It's a bowl shaped washer if that makes any sense.

12 mm edge to edge with a 6mm hole in the middle.

Could I use an o-ring or a load of ptfe?

the reg has MIGNON on the front and K1 N 081819 110 BAR RH around the edge
 
Doesnt really matter what the washer/O-ring is made off as long as it seals, bit of rubber and cut it out. esp if its two flat surfaces coming together. dont think the gas will complain;)

Back in the day when I was doing motorbikes and had no money, needed a gasket for a crankcase. Used a cornflakes box. Placed it over the fitting surface, tapped round the outer surface which marked it then cut it out, bit of grease on it so it didnt stick . Job done.
 
Except that CO2, especially if under the 55bar pressure of a cylinder, will dissolve in most rubbers either hardening them till they crack or melting the rubber depending on rubber type. This is why the CO2 fittings use PTFE or fibre washers.

In my experience rubber o rings melt and silicone go hard.
 
Thanks, I have a box of assorted fibre washers, I'll see if one of those does the trick
 
No, hard to explain, the washer needs to be a bit wider than the thread as it sits in a wider gap past the thread, hence fibre washer is either too small or breaks when getting it in.

Will see if any of the things Stuart linked to dies the trick

:banghead::banghead: forgot about that long term. Well would of used my method short term then get the right part.

Got a Bubble counter recently and that came with a 'O'ring for a seal - could of been a nitrile one - pretty sure their OK with CO2 or are they????

I've hunted back and realised it was a D-D kit from aquariumsolutions I got cheap from my LFS, so I've emailed them, will see if they respond (just found an old thread on here with someone asking same thing, they emailed them and never got a response)

Nitrile rubber is described as "acceptable" for use with CO2. Even more acceptable when as low pressure (ie 3 bar ?) of a bubble counter. Probably not OK at main tank 55bar pressure due to CO2 dissolving and being too soft.

Makes sense :thumbup: always good to learn from the experienced :D
 
Just been to B&Q, nothing suitable there. Think I might have to get another reg :( all because I cant get a washer

Im afraid the washer isn’t something we would stock as a spare, it maybe worth trying a shop that specialises in welding equipment as they maybe able to advise what kind of washer it is ( probably PTFE ) or stock one for disposable bottle regulators.
The same goes for the adapter I’m afraid as ours aren’t really designed to fit fire extinguishers due to the handle/nozzle assembly.

I went to a local welding suppliers this morning and they couldn't help me.
 
They look like they might do, glad its a packet of 50, already wasted 10 trying to make the hole bigger :) Drilling doesn't work, neither does heat.

Using a scapel is impossible, ends up splitting it.

Just tried a grinding dremel bit, that's made the hole bigger but not quite big enough. Tomorrow will see if I have a small round file anywhere
 
A friend had a leather hole punch, that made a perfect size hole.

Zero leaks :)

The only very weird thing is it seems to work without squeezing the fire extinguisher handle. But the knob that pushes needle into FE turns fine and can turn bar to 0 or up to, well I set it at 3 (in line UP atomiser).

I thought it might just be the built up pressure, but it's been going for an hour now and I only squeezed the handle while testing for leaks.

I'm talking rubbish as usual :)

While bubbles are still coming out, it's dropped from 60 to just under 30 bar, I squeeze the handle and it's back to 60, so all is working fine :)
