Security Halides

Looking at metal halide units ... Wow they are expensive for us fish keepers .. looks like the light industry rips us off compared !

Can you not use say a 150Watt external "security type" halide??? These retail at around 45 quid.

Was also thinking of a nano halide ... will this be enough for a 3ft tank? ( at 150 watts?)

Depends, I'd much prefer to use a reefer focus plate and DIY a halide rig cheaper and you're going to get a much better spread of light as the reflector will be designed with the aquarium in mind rather than lighting up a felon.
 
Reefer shops? Look for reflector reviews and then find out which gives the best spread, I'd read somewhere but many many moons ago and can't help more. Sorry.
