small black dots on roots of water sprite

Hi all,
I've recently noticed the accumulation of small black dots on the roots of my water sprite. They're shaped like ostracods and are of similar size, but they don't move. Here's a wide shot so you can see how many there are:

Any ideas on what these could be?

Hi all,

Not really Ben, I have something similar in some of the more "black water" tanks, but they aren't on Ceratopteris roots, it is the bladders of Utricularia gibba. Apparently they can use organic carbon as a food source.

Thanks, Darrel. I do have Utricularua growing there also, so that’s consistent. Do they seem innocuous to you?
