As a keen gardener I know that plants respond better if you talk to them, clematis have the ability to sulk and some dislike being grown near certain other plants. What aquarium plants do best together and which ones throw a wobbly when they do not like their neighbour?

Hi all,

I'm a bit of an agnostic about direct <"allelopathy in plants">.

Ole Pedersen (author of the link) is a <"senior academic"> in Copenhagen. There is a chapter on allelopathy in Diana Walstad's <"Ecology of the Planted Aquarium">.

Micro-organisms definitely wage chemical warfare on one another, and most (all?) plants are to some extent mycorrhizal, so it is likely that they are carrying out "proxy wars" in the substrate of established aquariums.

cheers Darrel
