Softening water with ADA soil

A thought occurred to me that if ADA soil has properties that soften water, for the benefit of plants and fish etc, but over time this ability is lost, would an option be to use a bag of in in a canister filter and replace with new every few months?

In a canister filter it will break down and muddy your water which may be undesirable.

Just use it as the substrate but siphon it out every 18 months and replace section by section if you wish.

I guess it could be a bit of a mess - I was thinking of Africana as I had a spare 9 L bag, as it seems to hold its shape much better the Amazonia - but replacing sections gradually probably a better idea
