surface skimmer Q!

what is a surface skimmer good for? i know it removes debris from the top, though what else r the benifits? i notice alota debris when lookin from the side up to the light, though if i had surface movement wouldnt it just sink the debris?

If you have a filter reutrn that disturbs the watr's surface then you won't really need a surface skimmer, but I quite like using them as they clear any surface debris off the top very rapidly.
