I have a friend who has one of the old Juwel Rio 125s with the T8 tubes. The tubes themselves have never been changed, so are around 2-3 years old. He's starting to get into plants and looking for the cheapest option to upgrade his lights. I've suggested adding reflectors, which he could do easily with his T8s of course.

I notice AE do T6 tubes with a kit to adapt to Juwel lengths. Do you think the T5 clips on standard Juwel reflectors would fit the T6 tubes? I'm thinking if he gets Juwel reflectors to fit his T8s, would he then be able to upgrade his lights to T6 and use the same reflectors?

T6 tubes are the same diameter as T8 (1") so the T5 clips will be too small/

No they're not, I have a t6 knocking about that came as a floodlight and it's noticeably thinner than a t8.

a quick search has revealed that T6 are 3/4" (not 1" as i orginally thought)

That's right, the 6 means 6/8 of an inch, so T6 is one eighth of an inch fatter than T5. I thought the T5 clips might squeeze round one.

Do T6s fit any T8 light unit?

    Use T8 light clips

    warm them under a flame

pinch them to correct size being careful not to burn your fingers!

Wouldn't they allow water to get in the unit as they are thinner?

You need a brushing set to fill that void

    I see, clever stuff.

I'll probably get a tube if I get around to it.
