Trimming plants

depends on your CO2 rate ferts etc and plants.
If you're running a good nutrient rich enviroment they will bounce back twice as good!

It also depends on which plants. Some are fussy, others love a hair cut. Whats your list ?

Quite basic at the moment,

Java fern
Windelov
Giant vallis
Taiwan moss
Java moss
Needle fern

It is the moss I was rely thinking of as some hair algae is building up in it so was just going to trim the top layer with the hair algae off.

you can snip out older leaves on microsorum just snip off with snarp scissors close to the rhizome, will grow back, how fast depends on your tank.
moss just cut like a haircut, bear in mind it sinks rather than floats so enure all filters are off and if possible have a syphon going to suck it up as you trim or it will be everywhere in your tank... especially if you have a carpet.
Val leaves can be held and pushed back towards the substrate to remove a whole leaf or you can cut with scissors but you will always have an ugly cut end.

Really you need to find the cause of the hair algae though as it will always come back, particlarly in moss and quicker than the moss grows.

I think the HA is because the moss is under the inlet and not much flow where it is and also bits of flake sit on it and not all are eaten so both causing the problem, will maybe swap its position with something else that will not hold bits of food like Java fern and get the moss in the main flow of the tank to keep it clean.

You can trim them but its a little different to normal stem plants...

Java fern....... Trim unwanted leaves from the bottom of the stem. Also, new plantlets can be removed to encourage better growth in the main plant. (these grow at the tips of existing leaves).
Windelov....... As above.
Giant vallis......Snip off from the base of the leaf and new ones will grow. Some people snip the tips off but it can cause damage.
Taiwan moss... Not sure but assuming its the same as any other moss you can give this a haircut by trimming it down to the length required.
Java moss... As above.
Needle fern... As per Java fern above.
