Hi
Iam eleven days into a dry start using UG and its all meting away, I cycled the ada amazonia v2 for a month first ,I tested for ammonia and it was zero ,using ro water ,a vivid 2 light for 12 hours a day ,the other plants seem to be doing OK,

Has anyone who's growing it successfully got any advice, I'm considering waiting another couple of weeks and trying again but growing it submerged this time with the addition of co2 .

I think the same thing might happen again though, I used about 12 pots and I don't fancy waisting another £50-60 .

I need help thanks

A sample of soil taken and left in water overnight, maybe it still is leaching a little ammonia, would that be enough to kill my UG

I wonder if perhaps they’re planted too deep? Only the roots should be covered.

The sample on the left is from the new tank the one on the right is from a tank that's been running for 6 years

Maybe but they disappear into the soil the more they melt

The only other thing I can think of is Nitrate/ Nitrite ,I tested these on the 25th March Nitrite was 0 Nitrate was 160 ppm and last night I tested the water I spray them with and that had a tds of 160 ppm

Still removing slime ,I should remove it all really, it will probably cause an ammonia spike when I flood the tank but I've still got that false sense of hope thinking some of it will pull through 🤣

Thinking of trying Hc cuba next but will buy one pot and see how it does before I get more.

UG works best if you get a submerged grown sample and and add it to a cycled aquarium. Then soon you wont be able to get rid of it. In my experience the TC version only works well in dry starts

Do you happen to have any submerged samples you can send me, I will test this theory out for you

It's gone ,I've ordered a pot of cuba and some hair grass, one positive the mini Hydrocotyle tripartita is doing well.

I would but postage would be expensive and it will 100% turn to mush before it reaches you seeing as how Im in Bombayand its peak summer !! :D

If you are using TC pots then another thing to try would be to leave some of it floating in another tank if you have one. Even easier if you have a magnetic scrubber, use the inside half as a base to keep it just slightly in the water till it adapts.
Most people have better success with it in a dry start but in my case I always have better luck when water is involved. 90% will die off but the 10% that survives is plenty to fill in a lot of space in a couple of months

I do have another tank I will try in the future, what water parameters are you growing it in TDS Gh ph kh

Thanks for the advice ,always interesting to hear other people's experiences, we never stop learning

My TDS is in the 100-200 range. pH around 7. I never measured KH and GH on this tank because the API test kit for those is garbage and really hard to make out but I did my best to try and get a reading for my cardina tank and it was around 1 for KH and 4 for GH. This tank has Seiryu stone so it would be higher than that for sure. I have also grown it in another tank which had lava rock so I guess it would be safe to say that low to medium KH and GH is fine. Temps are in the 22 to 26 *C range and UG definitely prefers cooler water

What substrate do you use, maybe aqua soils aren't the best option for this plant,I was thinking flourite black or something that doesn't have as much nutrients might work better

Its a custom Aquasoil type substrate that I was planning to manufacture and sell but then got too lazy. I didnt plant UG in it till a few months down the line though so while it had plenty of nutrients still, the Ammonia cycle was well finished by then

@SSK101 Utricularia graminifolia isn't a true aquatic plant, it's only periodically submerged over the year growing in the marshes and I think it rather belongs to <<this>> group of plants. But it's sold here and there and promoted by various plant growing companies due to it's carnivorous properties (and some sort of fame for it) - either underwater or over the water surface. So it will melt underwater sooner or later if not allowed to be emersed for most of the year. As a carnivore it prefers water with almost no nutrients at all, similarly to terrestrial carnivorous plants.

I like it for its bright green colour and grass like look, surprisingly some healthy UG has appeared in small patches amongst the hc,I'm going to leave it and see how it goes.

Added some Moss,Panda shrimp and Otos to my old 45p, The shrimp and Otocinclus will be going in the bigger tank when it's ready, I've been purposely trying to grow Algae in this tank for the last month to feed the animals leaving the light on for 10 hours a day

Never knew Otos liked Hokkaido Pumkin ,I put it in for the Shrimp but they will be lucky to get any after the piglets are finished
