That plant looks like a plant i saw in the river i went to. It looks very nice and it looks like it could be a good carpet.

Found what the plant name is:
Vallisneria aethiopica Fenzl
http://plants.jstor.org/upwta/2_857?cookieSet=1

An aquatic herb of fresh or brackish water, recorded only in Senegal, Ghana and S Nigeria in the Region, and extending into Ethiopia and Zimbabwe. The plant is often dense-growing with a fibrous root-system. It is recorded as being troublesome in slow-flowing waterways in Zimbabwe (1).It is very closely related to V. spiralis Linn. of European distribution, which is popularly grown in aquaria. V. aethiopica may have the same utility.

I will see if I can find it in the UK.
