Water intake pipe on external filter

After reviewing sone articles "planted tank" i have noticed two different place for the water intake pipe. One guy had his half way down the tank and was at an angle and another was positioned near the top, mine is at the bottom - could somebody expalin the best position ie top, middle or bottom.

Was it just a result of the length of the pipe? I know glass intakes tend to be quite short, whereas plastic ones can be quite long.

I dont see there being much a of difference between the three positioned to be honest. I guess if it is lower then water and muck from the bottom of the tank would get filtered out better, but other than that I cant see it mattering all that much.
